Ambrose's Rookie status

can anyone tell me why Ambrose has to have the Rookie stripe but doesn't qualify for rookie status in the points?

#8-Aric Almirola and #47-Marcos Ambrose both ran over seven Cup races in 2008.

Seven is the most a driver can run in a season and still run for ROTY.

My Favourite 08 moment was when Courtney/Besnard comeback drive at Bathurst. Courtney raced through to dominate the opening stint had 15 sec. gap to Lowndes who was in 2nd. In the 2nd stint a slowly deflating tyre (originally diagnosed as a damaged anti-roll bar) slowed Besnard's stint in Courtney's car allowing Whincup to assert dominance over the field rest of the race. On lap 160 S.Richards, fading badly on rear tyres was unable to stop Courtney move into 3rd place.

He doesn't score points because, as Racenut7 said, he ran more than 7 races last year. However, he still has to run the stripe at certain tracks because NASCAR mandates you run the rookie stripe if it is your first time at the track (so at places like Watkins Glen where he has raced before, he won't have a stripe).

You get the odd anomaly through this ruling such as Dick Trickle winning ROTY in 1989, despite having driven in 16 NASCAR races and making his debut before it was the Winston Cup.

but did he not also have the stripe this year at Sonoma, where he raced last year also? and what about Daytona on the weekend, he was there in February?

I do think he has to run it at Daytona even though he ran in February similar to Logano who is a "real" rookie; he runs it at every race, even repeat tracks. As for Sonoma, it was probably cheaper to only print decal wraps with the rookie stripe on them, or they forgot. By NASCAR rules he did not need to run it there, and his performance at both tracks you mentioned sure was anything but "rookie." As a Marcos fan I am a little dissappointed he won't get to win Rookie of the Year, but, I'll take a good season with no award over a bad season with ROTY included.

The Rookie stripe means you have not raced on that track before.

Keselowski, Papis, and Bean are also running for it, but don't run the whole season.

Also, if Aric Almorola and the #8 return, he will have the stripes as well.
