There is track activity on Saturday 29, though not in the Speedway but in the nearby Indianapolis Raceway Park: the Star Mazda Championship and USF2000 National Championship have their Night Before the 500 races.

The good thing about this is that it should allow the "2nd week entrants" to qualify further up the grid, as there basically isn't any 2nd week of qualifying.
But filling all 33 grid slots on the 1st day will be pretty busy. Bump Day should be more fun to watch, though. Does that mean there will not be any time for bumping on Pole Day because the positions 12-22 and 23-33 will have to be filled? |

They can bump on any day once the field has 33 cars in it...If the 34th qualifier gets into the top 33 avg. sppeds, the guy sitting on the bubble just got popped....even if it is on Saturday...but he try to bump his way back in if they keep the 3 attempts per day rule. They may not actually fill the entire field on Saturday, but there will be lots of qualifying action, unless they do something stupid like only fill slots 1-17 on the grid on Saturday... Sunday's late day action will depend entirely on how many cars are actually entered in the race and how many are able to try to bump their way in... The past couple of years were pretty good ones with Lazier bumping his way in (2008) and RHR squeezing his car in very late in the day last May to finally give a good vibe to an otherwise terribly slow month for him. |

A shame to lose the 'true month of May' even further, but i can see why they've done it, and the potential of seeing two 'packed' days of qualifying and bumping is a tantilising prospect, i think this could definatly work out quite nice.
Will they still allow each car 4 shots per day?? One hopes they might revert to the old way, given qualifying has been cut to two days. |

Personally, I am a "traditionalist", and I like the classic format of the Month of May...but it is also true that we are in a difficult economic situation...in this particular context, the second and third day of qualifications, which are certainly much less exciting then Pole Day and Bump Day, can be sacrificed on the altar of "shake a little belt" and then restore them when the economic situation will get better (as did a decade ago)...and then we will be losing a single day of track activity...
