Strictly business? Yes. It seems that even NASCAR is a large corporation that is not immune to the effects of an awful economy and poor decisions.

It will be fascinating to see what the future holds for ALL the series controlled by NASCAR. Also, the article mentions that this isn't the first time they have made some changes/cuts at the top level of the "company"; has there been cuts in the lower tiered series funding, staff etc.? Is it possible that this is the beginning of major changes/restructuring?

The economic effects certainly are a part of all that, but it's normal business.

nascar had a big boom and national expansion over 15 years. That is now over for now. They've expanded to market capacity and there are no big plans for future ovals elsewhere that are solid projects. So with the boom over it's time to trim the payroll.
