Martin (Schanche) stuff

Saw a recent advery on a racing site that had some stuff for sale by none otehr than Martin Schanche from Norway!!

It was a 306 Peugeot Kit Car and a 206 WRC Bozian run car, not sure why he would have them unles he is looking at doing som rallying or maybe prepping them for a customer.

Thought he was more into his political career these days!

See here: http://www.schanche.com/

The slap in the video was meant to be an "echo" as his political opponent called Martin a coward during the debate...

As far as I know yes and over here we would call him a local or municipal politican of a populistic right wing party. However, my English/German dictionary does not show an English translation for Populismus...

Lol, cmon Ayes we cant have your LeMans ness, invading the sacredness of rallycross!!

Seriously one year he drive at Le Mans, then came over to Ireland to drive the RS200, dont think he won but was on the pace.

A lot of people forget too that he used the same engine in the Argo that was in the Xtrac, a Zakspeed turbo, not sure it was right for endurance racing but then again!!

I was a rallycross fan too - albeit I last watched it many years ago. If memory serves me right, I think Martin entered Le Mans at least twice, but I stand to be corrected. Any thread worth it's salt has to have some Le Mans correlation - you should know that by now!

Martin Schanche at the 24h of Le Mans:
1986 together with Irishman and Mondello owner Martin Birrane and Norwegian karting ace Torgjer Kleppe (Birrane retired in 1st lap with broken engine; I was with them).
1987 together with Brits Will Hoy and Robin Smith (retirement after crash, IIRC Martin crashed)
1988 together with Brits Robin Donovan and Robin Smith (25th overall)

...and after his last stint in 88, he jumped in a plane to a small Airfield in west Dublin (Weston) from where he took a helicopter to Mondello Park to take part in the Euro RX round taking place that day. It was Schanche's Mondello debut and the first time I saw him in the flesh. I'm not sure why he wasn't there in 87, the first time the Euro RX came to Ireland. Bearing in mind he missed 87 and practice the previous day in 88, he finished second and should have won but for going wide on the last corner of the second last lap, albeit under pressure the whole way from Alamakki who was unbeaten in the 4 years he raced at Mondello.

Schanche's first heat was AMAZING. The car was ALL OVER the road, people assumed he had a handling problem. No, said Schanche, just pushing over the limit to learn the track quickly. Legend....

Really enjoyed reading your post Graz. I'm sports mad, nothing came close to 'Martin Schanche' in full flight. Was very lucky to see a lot of him in action on and off the track back in the day.

He was a good man, but was also a little bit temperemental, the incident with Alamaki in Sweden in 88 will always stay with me, and of course the pathetic strop at Finland in 92 where he quite rightly got banned.

For that he will never be a legend to me, Kenny, Norstedt, Opland, Matti, Olle, all did some dodgy stuff but were not as bad as Martin!

His cars were fantastic, the xtrac was in a different league & if he hadnt dabled in sports cars think he would have won the 85 & 86 championship. Remember looking at the rs200 at Lydden when he narrowly beat Renny , had all fabricated front suspension with "horizontal" shocks or the year he won the euro at Lydden after Gollop crashed and he distroyed Doran in the restart the later Escort remember it at Valkensvaard when he beat his lap record . class !

He was a great engineer, but he also had a decent budget, earned admittedly from success,

Sorry man, I loveed MArtin, but some of the things he did were just wrong, and that takes it away a touch for me

To me martin was/is the most dramatic drive out there if he put himself in a position on the outside to deep he would do his best to get back on track and then come back to the car in front and where he found speed from we will never know (red mist).so many drivers out there could never get a car in the positions he did and keep going ,he was a wild card but I think that goes with Norwegian's. Not saying he should have done the things he did sometimes but we all do things in the heat of things .
His mechanical thinking and building was always on going to me his best example was the yellow escort when in full aero ,remember seeing at lydden for the first time carbon this carbon that ,with his trick gearbox and suspension .
shame ford never carried on with him the opel was never 100% he did his best with what he had .
As for him having big ££££ there was a few that had more but he spent his where he new would work best .

RS, as an engineer and a visionary I dont think there has been better

I just hesitate to bracket him a great in pure driving terms due to a few things he did.

If you remember a few guys in the RS500 were done for fuel/turbo issues, even Kenny!

But I always go back to Finland 92 and recall never being so disappointed in a driver other than Senna on Prost in 1990 at Suzuka, just changed Martin's image for me sadly.

I was in Finland in 1992 and stood taking pictures less than 20 metres away from the scene of the incident. It was Will who caused the whole case. But that does of course not excuse that Martin over-reacted and went nuts.

Martin was a car length ahead and clipped the banking inside of the first corner. Before the RS200 was fully stabilized Will started to push its tail, till there was nothing to rescue for Martin any longer, and Pekka Rantanen did the rest.
