CROFT NOSTALGIA (HSCC)
Military displays, vintage planes, car clubs and HSCC grids on track. A gem of a meeting, and a chance for the best Darlington Curry houses to have a busy weekend!

Not bad but what a shame the saloon car grid is thin. I saw about a million Minis and Cortinas at Silverstone last weekend - is a longer trip up the A1 really too much ?

Although I would guess that a few will not travel up to the meeting, the cars you saw at Sillystone last weekend were (AFAIK), U2TC and Masters series cars. Croft is a straightforward HSCC Championship meeting, and will likely only attract regular HSCC racers in HSCC spec cars. |

I recall one year looking at the HRSR touring car entry and working out that 90% of the entries came from south of Oxford ... so how about a few more Northern entrants ? Most people nowadays trailer their cars and for the Southerners that is typically a 6-hour+ trip up the M1 or A1. This is the first time for a decade that I have not entered, the reason being that I drive the race car to-and-from and the journey from W. London to Croft for the last two years has been incredibly fatiguing. I am the only driver in Historic Road Sports who claims road-going points.
So that is one possible reason why there has been a bit of a drop-off in entries - not surprising really. Nick |

I suspect a further reason is the financial side of things - two big meetings on consecutive weekends is not cheap! |

Well that was a fun weekend - FF1600 especially well supported and entertaining. Lots of nice cars in paddock too - from a lovely Topolino via a Fiat 850 Coupe and a pukka Cobra to some Ole Englishe traditional MGs and Triumphs and an F40.
But God above - why has the circuit management decided to employ such an excess of 'security ' staff, a sizeable minority whom miss no opportunity to be such officious tics ? Amazing how Silverstone , Oulton , Cadwell , Donington and many other venues I have been to this year survive with a tiny proportion of hi vis clad staff - and sometimes no metal crowd barriers at all..... |

@Robyn. The HSCC/hrs rules, have been constant for years and were originally written around gp5 freedom and aimed at affordability? Things moved on and 10-15 years ago the cars were miles faster then anything App k. Now money has crept, no, Marched in, 'App k .legal' seems to be a kind of open cheque book challenge for what was a gentlemans hobby, but is now a retired BBC playground, with works budgets.
Road sports used to be just that, but has, again got very competitive and a genuine road going car is far from competitive. |

So, I've been out of things for a couple of years now but try & keep up with what's going on.
Just been looking through the very good pictures by Joshua Barrett. It concerns me the amount of body damage considering such a small field. |

Not there this year but the first one I've missed for some time. It is a great event and always suffers when only one week after the Silverstone classic meeting. A couple of years ago when there was a two week gap there was a far better entry. I can't see Silverstone ever considering Croft when dates are set so it's up to Croft to work around the classic and set the meeting for no less than 2 weeks after.
Regarding the HRSR/App K spec comments Zeff is right that the cheque book inspired developments in the App K side of things, plus the relaxation relating to electronic ignitions and suspensions, has mightily reduced lap times in those classes ( I hope all those cars are legal!) that HRSR/HSCC has had to look at reducing weights to maintain competition parity. The reverse of what happened almost 20 years ago. |

It is a good event but, as you say, timing was unfortunate this year. Silverstone Classic has to be two weeks after the BGP, due to the time it takes to 'break down' the latter, so as we already know the date of the 2018 GP, we can work out when the Classic will be... (July 20-22nd) That may give Croft an extra week between the two events next year!
Then hopefully not clash with Nurburgring OldTimer...... |

I agree about the security staff - there were far too many of them and a small minority were pretty obnoxious. One of them refused entry to two HSCC people who explained that, unless they got in, there would be no signing on and therefore no racing. The response from the security guy was "I don't give a f*** about racing!"

I agree about the security staff being a bit OTT - they even took to patrolling the track in between races:

Whaaaat? I sincerely hope Croft are getting feedback on the 'security' problems experienced- Sounds like Silverstone Classic a few years ago when a certain contractor was used..... The lesson was learned there! |

#52. That must be first outing for my old RS2000 since I sold it! Good to see. I think HSCC said it could race in Road Sports as an invitee. There used to be one racing in the series but years ago the model was declared no longer eligible.....
Thanks Gary! |

That's odd - I thought it looked like yours but then discounted it as I thought it wasn't racing with the HSCC!

Well, it's a Gp1 car, but road registered and MOTd so meets those Road Sports criteria, if not others.... The current owner is Yorkshire based and has raced a Mini in HRSR, so Croft Nostalgia logical place to run it!

Great photos Gary.
Couldn't manage to get to this event, always one of my favourites. |
