You can bet if you raced with a head like that today the designers would have a field-day with aero-trims!

Somehow I failed no hear or notice a Mk1 V16 BRM driving up behind me and I had to leap out of the way... Got a great photo of him though |

M.Vipernoir, I would have to second Ray's comment and question.
From what I have heard of a 16 BRM (not in person unfortunately), the wind must have been pretty darn strong against your back not to hear it coming! I would be very interested to hear the story, right down to camera body details etc. |

At least it shows that you didn't have to be in good shape back then, i might have had a chance!!!
Although there was that race in Argentina where everyone except Fangio and I think someone else had to share their car due to exhaustion! |

Laugh all you want … Gonzalez and his ilk were more man than any of the 150-pound pretty boys that drive around in their little computer controlled toys today.

F. Gonzales
Gonzales had a brief career; he made only 26 starts. Statistically, he ranks high in two respects: (1) He found his way to the Podium 15 times, or about 57% of the time, and, (2) he earned 3 points, on average, in every race he ran which is a very exclusive club with only ten members enrolled. It is very hard to evaluate drivers like him who enjoyed only brief careers. Who can say what he might have accomplished given six or eight years in F1?

At least he raced on for years afterwards... and with truck engines in Ferraris... what fun!
Wasn't it Roberto Mieres who was the only other driver to go the distance in the 1955 Argentine GP? Blisters were very common in that event... |

Yep, those were the days. Race car drivers were 40some pounds overweight, drank whiskey, smoked cigars, stayed up all night playing poker. Ate steak and potato's for dinner , and probably never even heard of a gym .

isnt it good now though. intelligence counts too nowadays. and drivers being fit is good for the sport's image. competitiveness is multifaceted nowadays. i'm all for the present.
