The Minardi Dream....
Paul Stoddart:
“My dream is a podium, but I know that you have got to be realistic and before that we are going to have to get reliable enough to be able to race with everybody. I think realistically we can finish between eighth and tenth in the championship, as there are two teams I think we can beat next year.” Please, Please, Please!!!! One Minardi podium - that's all we're asking for.... Please, God!!!!! Last edited by LucaBadoer; 2 Dec 2001 at 14:20. |

You'd be better off asking for a point first and with that Asiatech engine a finish might be worth praying for!!!!!!!

The attempt at signing Frentzen shows ambition, but Gustav Brunner's depearture is too serious a loss, and the Asiatech engine has question marks over it, though the decline in Arrows' straightline speed between 2000 and 2001 way be down to Hamidy's departure. Plus Alex Yoong looks relatively weak, there must be at least 100 other drivers who could do a better job, though maybe without money or of the 'wrong' nationality

Minardi do have a few problems facing them before they can think of such lofty standards.
One: They have growing debts and with the economic climate it is today, sponsors are not as ready to jump on board. Some are pulling the plug on deals, others are minimizing their involvement. However, with South-East Asia becoming increasingly involved, that could also help Minardi. Two: driver calibre. Yoong is no Alonso, and unless PS can sign Frentzen or someone else with talent, then Minardi will be mired down where it has been since the mid-1990s. Three: engine. I'm sure Asiatech should be able to come up with at least a half-competitive unit next year, but compared to the BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes, it will be left behind. Minardi is going to have to attract a major engine manufacturer, but that could spell the end of the team. A podium for the team is a long way off yet. However, a point or two may be possible if they manage to get HHF. |

I'm sorry, I'm too used to Paul Stoddart's broken promises to take much notice of this. Of course, I still hold out hope

A podium for Minardi would be like a world championship. But realistically it will not happen.

You've got to have a dream but Stoddart better get a good driver in his other car because Yoong isn't the driver to achieve it.

Yep, they definately need a good driver... Otherwise though there is some reason for optimism. I think they can beat Prost (by virtue of Prost arriving with a seriously compromised car next year, if they arrive at all) and I think they can beat Toyota.

I agree that Minardi could use a quick driver in their other car -- Mark Webber or Justin Wilson, maybe? -- but, in fairness to Alex Yoong, he seems to be a very intelligent and level-headed driver who takes his driving seriously (he is currently embarked on a rigorous fitness routine, from what I read) who doesn't destroy cars (important for a low budget team) and is probably pretty good at testing. So, while I would be surprised to ever see Alex on the a podium, I think it would be great to see him score a point or two. (And, lets face it -- the Malaysian Magnum money he brings along is pretty important for Minardi, too, not to mention the possible interest in the team on the part of Proton).

There will have to be a massive improvement in the Asiatech motor for Minardi to be competitive, I think the Prost team will be the only one they could beat otherwise. I suppose one advantage they have is that money they would have used to pay for the engines can be redirected to chassis development. I'm sure Paul was thinking of this when he signed with Asiatech. Maybe he'll get a bonus surprise, say a motor with 850+ hp.
