Every track represents some level of danger. The speed of the F1 cars as the exit turn 1 on the oval will not be as high as the speeds attained at the Lesmos or the long sweeper at Hockenheim. I for one would think that a glancing blow on the wall at Indy would be better than possibly hitting a tree at Hockenheim (not likely but possible).

The one thing Indy has a lot of experience with is someone hitting the wall. If that happens the safety car will come out and the medical team will be at the crash site very quickly as they have several teams stationed around the track at all times.

they should be able to run 2-wide into the last turn,
(indy turn one) with the high downforce setups, it should be fairly safe. when juan-pablo get there next year he's going to be going a lot slower there then he did when he won the 500. of course, it does look like a concrete canyon to driver. should be spectacular. |

"hey should be able to run 2-wide into the last turn, (indy turn one)"
Fat Chance. It is quite unlikely that cars will be going into that turn 2 wide, because the road course does not lend itself to tight racing. By the time the cars have gone through it once there should be about a 1 second or more difference between each car. I don't think the one turn is that dangerous, because it is a very fast corner, which is normally taken at 360 kph at a very low downforce setup. By contrast, the Formula One cars with more downforce will be going through the last turn at about 290 kph. In other words, they won't be anywhere near "the limit", so a crash is unlikely. Then again, the same was true of Tamburello. |
