A1GP to head to Sydney.
According to F1central.net, and Alan Jones, the Australian Leg of the A1GP Season is to be held in Sydney.
This begs the question ? Eastern Creek ? A last hurrah at Oran Park ? (unsafe but i wish !!) Or a street circuit around Sydney ? given Sydneys traffic problems i would have thought that a street circuit would be out of the question. Your thoughts ? |

I doubt the street circuit option very much and I suspect that Eastern Creek will be announced as the venue.

If it is Eastern Creek, would anyone care to guess about passing opportunities. Does the track lend itself to easy overtaking for open wheelers or is it more like Hungary?

Eastern Creek looks like a good enough track. It might look a bit short at just under 4 km, but I'd imagine the A1s running in the mid 1'20"s for lap times, so not that short at all.

Eastern Creek sounds good, it's 20 minutes away
The launch is in Sydney on March 30 as well. |

An F3 does 1.26 to 1.27. Great open wheeler track with some fast corners and undulating around the back. 3 or 4 spots to pass for the brave.
Turn 1 is easy flat in a well sorted car. |

If F3 is doing 1:26, A1GP is likely to be about 10 seconds a lap quicker

The Sydney race is planned to be held at Eastern Creek on 27 November 2005 according to the current A1-GP calendar. Don't be surprised if it changes though.

I have just noticed that the V8's are racing at Phillip Island on the 27th of November as well. I hope A1-GP realise that racing on the same day as the V8's in Australia is a bad idea.

The international TV audience is the most important thing though.

Has anyone heard anything about a franchise being issued to New Zealand?? I heard a whisper that someone or someones are looking to secure one for this part of the world, but no names have been mentioned. Someone must know

Bathurst would of course be fantastic but most the open wheeler boys are too soft to give it ago so my guess is Eastern Creek is the only venue that could really handle it unless they finally did a street race around the Olympic site at Homebush as has been rumoured for years. An international series may give the state government the extra motivation that has it has always lacked to go through with it. The problem with this is the way Carr's boy work I imagine it would be too late for them to prepare for this year as they'd want to do all sorts of environmental studies to make sure it doesn't disturb some native frog or bee or go knows what but it could be an option in future years.

Uh oh, this is doubly stuffed from the start. Running any major event in Sydney automatically halves your trackside audience and doing it on the same weekend as a V8 round gets rid of the other half.
They may be interested in the international teev audience but it looks pretty bad when that big main straight stand is empty! |

Chucky is right. the date is a no go. a week later or earlier would be better but what else is going on in Sydney at that time? If its not well promoted count on a crowd less than 5000. It's go be the most important sporting event on in Australia, what ever the weekend, if it is to have any marketable impact in Sydney.
