Sheikh Maktoum
Hi, today a wealthy Sheikh from dubai died from a heart attack on the gold coast.
my first thoughts were of the founder of A1GP, but it wasnt him it was Sheik Maktoum bin Rashed al-Maktoum. i am wondering if he is the father/uncle/brother etc of A1Gp's Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum? either way Rest In Peace |

The A1GP Sheikh's father is the cousin of the emir of Dubai who died, so extended family.

I guess that Indonesian round would be moved to the date of cancelled Brazilian round at Curitiba (February 12th).

I stand corrected, have just read that the emir was the Sheikh's uncle, not as much of a distant relative compared to what I read yesterday.
While I understand the reasons for the postponement, I also think that if a round of the world cup of motorsport is postponed every time a VIP dies, then we would never get through a season... Would having the round next week with appropriate minute of silence or other marks of respect not be a better way to honour the emir? Also, while the Sheikh is an absolute hero to me for having the vision and determination to see it come to reality, if it is to be a genuine World Cup it has got to be bigger than one man. Understand that the Sheikh might have/want to stay in Dubai during the mourning period, but couldn't the show go on for one round without him being there? Cannot imagine the football world cup being postponed for anyone's death. Hope I am not being seen as lacking respect here, I just want the best for A1GP, i.e. for it to be seen as the world cup and not as a second rate series always affected by postponements and cancellations. |

On January 4th 2006, Dubai Ruler’s Court announced the death of the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE’s Vice President and Prime Minister.
Sheikh Maktoum died in Australia. The country will be in mourning for 40 days; local government organisations and departments will be closed for one week starting today. |

A tragic event. I suppose it is right for A1GP to observe atleast some of mourning time that their founder has to go thru. I doubt that the Shiek will be in a good state of mind for appearing at Indonesia only two weeks after such as traic event.
Use it to fill in the slot left by the Brazilian rounds cancelation would be the best idea i think |

They got Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashed al-Maktoum confused with Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum. Rookie mistake
Anyhoo, Indonesia is now scheduled for 10th-12th Feb, as predicted by many. |

But the dubai 24 hour touring/sports car race is still going on, why cancel a race in a foreign country but run one in your own?

I'll probably sound insensitive here but I can't be the only one who thinks postponing the Indonesia race is a little overboard? F1 wouldn't cancel a race if one of Bernie's extended family died.
