marcus has a real shot at the podium!marcus has a real shot at the podium!marcus has a real shot at the podium!marcus has a real shot at the podium!
I think its both.

all modern sports these days are a business , the teams are in the job of selling and marketing themselves to the sponsors and the public and then at race time it becomes a sport which entertains us.

thats my view anyway

I second Marcus. Nowadays there are very few sport disciplines that don't need money, and if there's money, there's business.

OMG, are you sure this deserves a thread.

V8s as are Carrera Cup as are F3 as are NRL, NBL, A-League, Netball, Chess Championships etc are all Sports Businesses.

Even your leisurely round of golf each Saturday is a Sports Business.

I think motorsport in general is much more of a business than a sport. I say this as while competitors in other sports need money to fund their training, etc, it's a whole lot less than the sort of sums required by a driver, especially an up and comer.

Also, the ascension of the up-and-comer is almost wholly dependent on funding as opposed to talent. When a junior can only climb the ladder by commercial means, then you have a business, not a sport. In Australia, V8 Supercar is as much an offender as any other with very few truly professional seats.

Becoming less a sport and more "just entertainment" , soon to become like "world championship wrestling" with perceived "goodies and baddies" with referees there to make sure that there is some dissension so as to make it all seem kosher, much like the "Harlem Globetrotter" matches = just entertainment based on a sport .

When the race starts I think it's sport however up until then it's business.
I think the state series and even the CAMS national series is still sport.

It's a hell of a lot more business than sport these days.

I wouldn't go along with that. It is supposed to be but the V8SA side let it down. Most of the teams are professional though.

The V8s are definately a business, and there has been a certain flow on effect top other categories. How many people were full time employees of racing teams, or extracted dough from one in some (other than promoters )form up until 1995 as compared to now?

However, "
V8s as are Carrera Cup as are F3 as are NRL, NBL, A-League, Netball, Chess Championships etc are all Sports Businesses."

I fail to see how chess is even a professional sport, let alone a business, maybe its a bad one and thats why I dont know about it , and while Netball is a VERY good sport, there a few people (Players or administrators and other officials) that could currently earn enough to not do some other work and survive from day to day.

HEAPS better to watch than a bunch of blokes in tight shorts, thats for sure!!

People may disagree with strategic decisions a company makes but that doesn't mean the business is any less professional.

Read what i said peckstar. The teams are not VESA, the teams make up TEGA. Of course they are a major shareholder in VESA. I was separating the show on the track from the behind the scenes goings on.

can you do that though. the teams appoint their representatives to TEGA. surely the professional teams would appoint professional representatives to run the show. If they dont they are not that professional.

for instance , one of the highly professional teams HRT, has their owner as a representative.

It's not so much the board of TEGA i was talking about. It is the appointed representatives of both organizations, TEGA and VESA. I think you can work out who they are.

Absolutely. As far as I can see these people don't make any money, they do it purely for the enjoyment.
