Easiest Track to Overtake on?
Well, it seems that every race where at the commentators say 'it's extemly hard to pass at this track" - and rightly so. But which track do you think it's easiest to pass on?
I'd have always said Hockenheim in the past, the long straights running down to chicanes and the stadium section always made it relativly easy if you had a decent motor, but now that tracks been slaughtered, I'd say Monza, and Spa. And I guess Indianapolis with the big banked run leading into the main straight and into turn 1. Sepang isn't too bad really, a few lines can be taken into some of the corners, particularly the last one. Montreal in the past has been OK, but today we were sadly lacking any decent passing. Hardest to pass? Hungary, Monaco, Catalunya, Magny Cours...etc |

Hockenheim has proven over the years to be fairly easy to pass at as it gives the driver time to get into the slipstream and out-brake (barely) the car in front. But that spectacle has now disappeared thanks to Bernie....
Spa is a good track to pass at. There are several oppurtunities around the circuit to have a go, La Source used to be one place but has disappeared as a venue in recent time, Les Combes appears to be the best bet while the Bus Stop is also a popular place to pass. Monza can sometimes throw up interesting races, but there is rarely passing up the front. It's usually the midfield guys who have exciting scraps. Hardest to pass? Monaco for sure and Catalunya since all the cars do the majority of their testing there. |

i personally think every track should be in the Canada mould, i.e... long straights, slow corners and hairpins, i can't remember a boring race there for quite awhile, oppertunities to pass etc (even if sometimes that means drivers cutting the corners!) who can forget Irvines brilliant driver in 1999 after DC spin himself and Eddie off the track at turn 2? that come back would proberbly not been possible on some of the other "mickey-mouse" tracks!

at least you can pass at the Gilles Villeneuve...
really, in every track there's only a clear opportunity (Interlagos at the Senna S, turn 1 Indy, Magny Cours at Adelaide...) |

Did anyone notice James Allen's faux pas yesterday, a true Murrayism when describing the Gilles Villeneuve circuit as an island with water on both sides?

Canada is certainly among the ones where a good driver has a chance to pass an okay one, or where 2-stop straegies can lead to overtaking of 1-stoppers, as we have seen over the years. Spa is one of the only other tracks taht is never short of action.

Well Stephen, The Gilles Villeneuve circuit is on an island
called Isle Notre-Dame. Also there's a big lake in the middle of the track. So there's water on both sides :-) |

This is my run-down.
AUSTRALIA: Passing possibilities at turns 1 and 3. MALAYSIA: Passing possibilities at turns 1, 4 and 15. BRAZIL: Passing at turns 1 and 4. IMOLA: Difficult passing possibilities at Tamburello, Rivazza and the final chicane. These are all tough opportunities though. BARCELONA: Difficult chances at turns 1 and 10. AUSTRIA: Good opportunities at turns 1, 2 and 3. MONACO: Very difficult half chances at St Devote, Mirabeau and the chicane. MONTREAL: Good chances at turn 1, the hairpin and the last chicane. Half chance at turn 9. NURBURGRING: Best chance at Veedolph chicane. More difficult chance at turn 1. MAGNY-COURS: One good chance at the Adelaide hairpin. SILVERSTONE: Half chances at Stowe, Club and Abbey. No really obvious opportunities. HOCKENHEIM: Last year's had 3 fantastic opportunities (making it the easiest to overtake), but I reckon this year's will only have one good passing spot. HUNGARORING: One half chance at turn 1. SPA: Good chances at La Source, Les Combes and the Bus Stop chicane. MONZA: Good chances at the 1st & 2nd chicanes, Ascari bends and Parabolica. INDY: Turns 1 and 8. SUZUKA: Difficult chances at First turn, the hairpin, 130R and the last chicane. SUMMARY: Easiest - Monza and Spa. Hardest - Imola, Barcelona, Monaco, Silverstone, Hungaroring and Suzuka. |

What about the easiest corners to pass on? Last year, the run into the stadium, and down to the first chicane at Hockenheim were the best chances, and the Adelaide corner at Magny Cours - remember the wet 1999 race - there was so much overtaking at that turn, and of course, the 2000 race, where DC overtook both Ferraris.
