For an average fan, this seems really bizarre. Why leave Mercedes when all the stars have finally aligned, and this team is probably on the verge of accomplishing something? Mercedes now has a great organization, brilliant drivers, money, and most importantly the confidence to win a championship in 2014. I am surprised.

He was/is rather surplus to requirements now at Merc considering all the management there. |

I read somewhere a long time ago that he was rumoured to go to Williams.

End of an era but if you believe what you read it's been on the cards for months. He's kind of made himself redundant, it seems.

This article from the BBC, back in Feb this year, sheds some light on why Ross Brawn were to leave but there's nothing on where he might go but then it was early days in Feb and still the off season.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if RB is going to Williams, where would he fit in alongside Sir Frank, Claire and Pat Symonds? What would his role be?

I can't see him going to Williams, for that very reason.
Here's a thought. If I were Sir Ron of Dennis, I'd bury old rivalries, ditch Whitmarsh and make Brawn an offer he can't refuse - absolute control of the F1 operation. |

According to the BBC article, "He has been linked with roles running Honda's new F1 programme when the Japanese manufacturer returns to the sport in 2015 as engine partner to McLaren." |

Although the same article says a move to Honda is viewed as unlikely by some insiders, after a less than entirely happy relationship in 2007-8.

Hmm.
Spend a year setting up 'something', maybe not in F1, and then Adrian Newey joins him in whatever it is? Just a thought. |

I thought boats were what you did outside racing after F1 more often than not?
What would he need to know that could not be picked up quickly in a team building role? But then I was only putting two and two together ... and of course boats could be a smokescreen. |

I think the boats are more because of Newey's professed interest in the America's Cup and their recent AC72 wing-sail foiling catamarans, than any interest on Brawn's part. |
