Bob Jane Aussie legend
Bob Jane, arguably one of the greatest individual influences since WW2, turns 75 today, going strong.
He has done it all, the highs & the lows. Unfortunately he did little racing beyond Australian shores, but was supplied with a Mk2 Jag by the factory for a race in England during the 60s & he put it on pole & set fastest lap - I believe the car appeared at Goodwood recently, anyone able to confirm? In 1963 Bob won the Australian Touring Car Championship in his 3.8, & in 1964 bored it out to 4.1 to win his 2nd (of 4) titles - I have heard it claimed this was the forerunner to the factory 4.2 - yes?? Bob also got one of the lightweight E types, & sold it in the 80s - anyone know where it is these days? Mark Knophler has an ex Jane Maserati. The 1969 ZL1 Camaro in which Bob won the 1971 Aus Touring Car Championship has been magnificently restored and is the only ZL1 to have tasted success on a circuit anywhere in the world - in North america they ran Z28s with 302s in Trans Am. Happy birthday Bob. |
