Jesper OH should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1991 Australian Group A Touring Car Racing - Discussion & Results

The 1991 season was marked by a decline in economy and reduced grids at most races - a follow up on the first Gulf war, that also afflicted the rest of the world of motorsport. The Fred Gibson Nissan Skylines were all dominant, with a young Mark Skaife really coming off age, but with teammate Jim Richards taking his fourth ATCC title. Holden offered a brand new package in the Commodore VN, luring back the Brock-Perkins constellation, while BMW made a return with ..Frank Gardner managing once again. Among the Sierras the Seton family had the legs on the DJR cars in most races.

The reduced grids was not solely down to the economy, it had as much to do with the fact that CAMS required all entrants, even those doing a one-off, to pay the full championship registration fee before their entry would be accepted. This angered alot of the privateers, Gerald Kay & Chris Lambden were very vocal about it, as was Brian Callaghan, and it discouraged alot of competitors.

The Brock/Perkins merger came about due to the rising costs of running a Sierra. Brock originally intended to just run the one Sierra in 1991, before the Perkins deal was done (it benefitted Perkins too, as it gave him the money to go racing).

It was, effectively, the end of what was in a previous life, the HDT. People like Graeme Brown etc.. were absorbed in Perkins Engineering for 1991 with Brock... (and according to Perkins, part of the contract to run Brock/Mobil was that he couldn't beat Peter on the track...)

There was another round, Tony Longhurst won both 10 lap heats from Mark Gibbs, who was debuting the GIO Nissan GTR

I'll have a watch of the DVD and put together some results

That was the race that the Forbes outfit was taken over by Gibson's crew. It's a fair assesment I think to state that in hindsight the GIO car was a semi works car with money going to the team through the Nissan dealer network

I have a note about the Mercantile Mutual Toyota Dealer Team being entered by driver John Smith for 1991. The Tony Giovanni managed Toyota Team Australia team seems to have been disbanned, with the Supra and the two Corollas going to this new outfit. Can any of our resident specialists elaborate on this shift?

Hi Jesper,

AMI Toyota and Thiess Toyota merged in 1987 to become Toyota Motor Sales Australia which became Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Ltd in 1989 to formalise the merge. TTA remained through this under the management of Tony Niovanni till sometime well into the 90’s.

TTA still owned all cars, transporter and equipment through this time until the end of Group A in 1993. The Mercantile Mutual sponsorship came about due to the withdraw of funding for the Group A team by the parent company Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Ltd in 1990.

The MA7# turbo and the AE92’s continued to run in 1991 entered by TTA but with Mercantile livery till the end of the series. Toyota still has the MA7#, one of the AE86 GT Coupes, one of the AE92 FX-GT’s and the transporter on its asset register. However, John Smith still has custody of the MA7# and promises to look after it till his last breath. All the others have been sold off with only one casualty when it went into rally.

Here is the MA71 Supra only a few months ago at Eastern Creek.

Capitol Motors, the former Datsun/Nissan importer, was a sponsor in 1991, and part of 1992. They were the largest dealer in NSW around that time, owned by racer Ray Lintott (who bought an ex-DJR Sierra to run in Valvoline colours in competition to the Nissan) so perhaps this unlocked some funds for the BFR squad?

Mr Forbes seemed quite happy to put his own personal dollars on the line though, the GIO deal, even in the Commodore days, was said to be quite a small investment from that company, while to spend $600k on a GT-R with at best an 18 month racing life, tells a lot about a racer not an accountant

Lets not forget that 00 Motorsport was also funded by Mr Forbes, with some income from Ford for one of the 3 cars.. not a decent sized commercial sponsor in sight

From what I can recall 13, Bob Holdens Corolla was a no show after Dennis Rogers had put it into the wall at Oran Park after a ball joint broke, Frank Biniding did the repair on it before Bathurst

Found a story about the Round in Racing Cars Magazine.

Race 1

1st 25 Longhurst
2nd 4 Gibbs
3rd 27 Finnigan
4th 3 Ashby
5th 33 Pearson
6th 8 Bond (engine misfire)
7th 52 Cotter
8th 48 Verheyen
9th 76 Conway
10th 13 Holden
11th 14 Stratton
12th 74 Binding
DNS 53 Doulman (low oil pressure)

Race 2

1st 25 Longhurst
2nd 4 Gibbs
3rd 8 Bond
4th 27 Finnigan
5th 3 Ashby
6th 33 Pearson
7th 52 Cotter
8th 76 Conway
9th 13 Holden
10th 48 Verheyen
11th 14 Stratton
12th 74 Binding
DNS 53 Doulman

And as can be seen in the results Bob Holden did race his Corolla as Rd3 of the Amscar series was 2 weeks before the final ATCC round at Oran Park, when his car was damaged with Dennis Rogers driving it and did not race again till Bathurst.
(He drove the other AE82 Corolla in the Sandown 500)
