HRDC Touring Greats, Grand Touring Greats and AMOC Intermarque, Mallory 30th May
Next outing for HRDC Touring Greats and Grand Touring Greats is at Mallory Park on Monday 30th May, full grids again I gather.
Sadly I can't make it, but fear not, Louise, filming will be in professional hands this time as it's a Motors TV Live day. There is also an AMOC Intermarque round ( 2x 10 minutes) to increase the historic contingent in a very mixed BARC list. Timetable is available here: http://www.barc.net/images/stories/p...115_MP3005.pdf |

Thanks Andrew but I fail to see how Motors TV coverage can be anywhere near as good as your "production". We were showing my sister the dvd over the weekend and it is simply fab!
Sorry you can't make the event. We plan to share the Aurelia in the 45m Touring Greats race although are slightly concerned that we only get 15 mins practice. After much excellent work by Zef (thank you) and Jason my little Fiat will also be making an unexpected appearence in class D of Touring Greats which has again been amalgamated with the Grand Touring guys. An errant valve guide after Brands meant an engine out but the boys have got us all sorted. Just need to learn how to drive the car... Who else will be out? Should be a lovely day and we're looking forward to more HRDC fun. |

Ah, Televised.
For information ... last time I was at a Motors TV live broadcast event at Mallory there were all sorts of interesting things going on with car immobilisers and alarms until the broadcast equipment was switched off - at which point everything returned to normal. There are other 10thers who will confirm that. Unless things have changed on the broadcast front (and they might have done) if your vehicle alarm goes off or your central locking/ignition refuses to work as expected don't panic - it's likely just the broadcast kit messing with the technology. |

I'll be there in the GT race. I've sneaked the Elite in instead of the WSM as I am also at Donington on Sunday in the Classic K race - busy, busy. Must try and book a B&B for Sunday night, sleeping in the Jeep is not my idea of fun and would go down particularly badly with the wife. See you in the paddock. |

Will be out as well, in the GT greats.
First try of this series, and hoping the driving standards are 'respectful' - It's a hell of a lot easier to get a Sprite front wing than a Giulietta one, and Mallory does tend to bring out the fender-benders! Looking forward to it, and the Mallory 'death-by-cholesterol' breakfast! See you and Jason (and Brian) in the paddock and on-track! |

Good luck Louise, Fiat sounds healthy again, a broken valve seat very nearly trashed the whole head so it was a lucky escape in some ways. Unfortuntely I won't be there, but having received 'the racer' this morning it looks like 2 bumper grids so bound to be an action packed day.

If the Brands spectacle was anything to go by James it was only those with too thicker wax on their cars that lost a bit of shine, nothing more that I'm aware of, good clean family fun.

Thanks for clarifying the engine issue Joe - I knew it was something valve related. Jason does explain things in depth but I fear it doesn't always register. Anyway, a massive thanks from me.
Brian it will be lovely to see you (and Pat) and of course you as well James. If Brands is anything to go by the race pace was pretty fierce but as a person being lapped in GT, plenty of room was given and Jason had some terrifically close battles in the Aurelia with no issues at all (only fun) although I agree that Mallory is always busy. Is anyone doing the test sessions on the Sunday? We tend not to do these (don't want to wear the cars out) but some extra time in the Fiat might be good and I haven't driven the Aurelia at Mallory so we might consider this. |

Hi Joe - I do hope we're allowed in as we'll be staying in George the truck. As there is a test day (still debating whether to do) however I guess we won't get into the paddock until that's finished unless we can get there at lunch time. Can't wait to see your new camper - do you think the weather will be good enough for a BBQ?

Entry list
Hello
Can anyone tell me where I can view the entry list? As Kevin Turner says in Autosport : "there are no fewer than 10 club race meetings planned for this weekend, providing 15 days-worth of action" + "it will be interesting to see where spectators decide to head for their Bank Holiday fix".... Please help me to choose Mallory! Sal : ) |

50's saloons has 30 on the list and 32 for the GT's . . . . . I think thats enough to ensure sufficient action.

BARC don't generally produce entry lists, but I know that Tin Tops had 35 cars, I would expect Intermarque to be busy, 2CVs and Caterhams won't disappoint... and the only thing I am not sure about is AMOC Intermarque, but I think that is enough to guarantee a good day at Mallory!

Martin Haven wasn't it? With Charlie Butler-Henderson as race driver pundit. We watched all afternoon on MotorsTV, some great racing in pretty poor conditions.

I should have stayed at home and watched that instead of being spoiled by a 6 car Mini grid on the GP loop at Brands!

It was pretty good - unfortunately last race was scrubbed after a red flag on lap one when the camera car got over-enthusiastic on the exit from Gerrards and discovered that wet grass has a remarkably low co-efficient of friction - nearly made it but just collected the end of the barrier on the outside of Stebbe straight and was launched into a barrel-roll with twist - driver OK, fortunately, but the delay ran the race into curfew time.......
Still some great bits of racing - loved watching a 90s Ferrari Maranello Cup car dicing with a 40(?) year older Aston DB4......and Jag Mk1 3.4 dicing with an A40.......and lots of other entertaining stuff! |

We got back late last night after a long day yesterday but ultimately successful and highly enjoyable. As everyone could see from the TV coverage the weather all day was horrid - a mixture of pretty heavy rain and drizzle which only stopped for the trip home which I guess was kind...
Anyway, in appalling practice conditions Jason and I just concentrated on keeping the Aurelia on track with any thoughts of a good time firmly out of our mind. We only had 15 mins to get both drivers through so our lowly grid position was no surprise. In terms of the race, I don't know if people noticed but they didn't grid anyone up at the back which meant Jason was out of position - he knew where he should be but couldn't get there. That meant he had to work quite a bit harder to move up the pack at the start. He had a pretty reasonable start and spent a few laps siting things out and settling down before he picked off a few people. The weather was particularly difficult, very greasy and half way into the race the rain came down heavier. By the time I got in the car Jason had done really well and got us into a competitive position. It's always difficult to get into a car in those types of conditions - the weather being variable and your co-driver doing well - no pressure then! However within a couple of laps I could feel the Aurelia dancing beneath me. it truly is magnificant in those conditions, four wheel drifting and allowing some close battling door handle to door handle with no fear that control would ever be lost. I truly loved my 20 mins - an absolute joy. And to our surprise a pretty decent result with a 15th overall and 2nd in class. i have to say a huge thank you for the driving standards - everyone was kind and considerate when lapping and fair but firm when racing. And so to my little Fiat Abarth. Practice for the GT Greats (which my class was in) was some time after the Touring greats practice and by this time there was even more water in the circuit mixed with some oil. I was astounded to get out and find that the Abarth adored the conditions - it was simple on rails around the corners with no loss of traction. I whooped and yelled with delight as my little one gobbled up some of the GTs cars. A 20th grid position and class pole was a huge reward to both Jason and myself - Jason had mended the car before when the wipers and the starter button stopped working. More of the race in a moment... |

Slight delay due to a conference call!
Anyway, onto the grid and properly gridded up I was aware that I had to make a really great start or suffer being gobbled up amongst the GTs cars. I have to say that I had one of the best starts I've ever made - I gunned the engine, released the clutch and bam, instant traction. The car was small enough to find some gaps and I got through the crowd and into some air, not far behind the 2 glorious Alfas of James Wiseman and Richard Frankel. I did get taken by a couple of cars but I settled down to a good pace. After a few laps disaster, little did I know but someone had put down a lot of oil or coolant or something at the hairpin and my car had a massive lock up and no traction at all. There was a dreadful banging noise (which I now know to be the wheels trying to grip) and I thought I'd broken the car and came into the pits. Jason checked it over but nothing so out I went, now a lap down and almost last in class. Ouch... So I put my head down but the car was acting very weird and I wasn't confident, especially at the hairpin and Devils Elbow. Geoff Turrall in the other Abarth wasn't slowing down at all and we had a lovely "battle" as he got past me (to lap me). Anayway, I decided to be sensible and to just try to catch as many of my class as possible - I managed to get past 3 which left me 3rd in class and I could see the Moggy in front - he spun at the hairpin and with one more lap I may have overtaken him but the flag came out and I came home a slightly disappointed 3rd in class (after my class pole) and 14th overall. As the boys said, I should really have been disappointed, the engine performed very well (thanks Joe!), I had a great start, the car loved the rain and I was sensible to get the car checked over. At least I now know what the car feels and sounds like in horrid oily conditions - basically like no other car I've driven - the "mechanical" sounding noise was scary! Anyway, as I say a fab weekend of racing despite (or maybe because of?!) the weather. Yet again Julius and the team put together exciting, competitive and friendly races and the award ceremony at the end is one never to be missed with Julius always having kind words and lots of prizes. Roll on Silverstone at the end of June!! |
