Durban
Images of Durban circuit being prepared are on the official A1 web site at http://www.a1gp.com/news/index.php?f...=1&newsid=167#
15,000+ tickets sold already, so perhaps a smaller crowd than at Brands but second best of the season so far? Being next to the beach in summer will hopefully mean a lot will turn up on the day. Looks like a great track. Well done to the Sheikh, Sth African seat holders and Durban organisers. A bit far from China, but I might have to go next year. |

Well it looks as though the temporary course only has a capacity of 22,000 per day so it ought to sell out!

Hey there one and all.
The grandstand capacity was initially supposed to be 22000, but due to greater demand than supply, it has been increased to 27500, taking into account that the majority of people will buy general admission tickets which are far cheaper, they have set a limit of 50000 tickets for the day. So far 45 000 tickets have been sold for the 3 days, but with masses of school kids expected to arrive by the bus load on friday, the goal of 100 000 people over the 3 days is a definate possibility! Took a walk around the edge of the circuit last nite and i must say that it is looking good. There is a fast and narrow stretch that goes past the Suncoast Casino on the boulevard and that, the final stretch before the main straight, will make the racing very interesting! Lets hope we have a hot sunny Durban day, just like we have today! |

that narrow stretch i mentioned curves...so i would imagine it will be rather fast into the final bend. Also the stretch along NMR avenue is 400m so they will reach good speeds there, and that corner by the Kings Park Pool complex will be blistering....so exciting to see these cars on my regular streets!

Thanks for the info dysan1, it sounds like it is going to be a fantastic event. Going by a couple of the images I alluded to, it looks like there is a hotel right beside the track at one point, next to the beach. Any idea what it is called? I might try to make a very early booking as soon as next season's calender is announced.

However, there are many, many more hotels to the south of the circuit on the seafront - roughly within 1-2 miles of the track (going by my rough "thumb measurement" and the scale. They might be a better option price-wise but, of course, you wouldn't get the viewing advantage. |

Apparently the race is under threat from environmental campaigners, reports autosport.com.

Nominated drivers for this weekend:
Australia Christian Jones Will Davison Austria Mathias Lauda Brazil Nelson Piquet Jr Canada Sean McIntosh China Tengyi Jiang Czech Republic Tomas Enge France Alexandre Premat Nicholas Lapierre Germany Timo Scheider Great Britain Robbie Kerr India Armaan Ebrahim Indonesia Ananda Mikola Ireland Ralph Firman Michael Devaney Italy Massimiliano Busnelli Enrico Toccacelo Lebanon Basil Shaaban Malaysia Alex Yoong Mexico David Martinez Netherlands Jos Verstappen Jeroen Bleekemolen New Zealand Matt Halliday Pakistan Adam Khan Portugal Alvaro Parente South Africa Stephen Simpson Gavin Cronje Switzerland Neel Jani USA Phil Giebler No Japan or Russia; curious that Jones is listed as #1 for Australia, and Italy have Max Busnelli as a new driver for the team. FP1 results are here - Indonesia quickest followed by Italy and Portugal. Last edited by cos; 27 Jan 2006 at 13:17. Reason: Fp1 results |

Seems like it was a fairly wet session and maybe not a true indicator of the speed? When does qualifying start?

Strange session. Only 23 cars on track, with Russia and Japan missing and neither France nor Canada posting a time. And it was Jones who set the time for Australia.

There's a story on www.motorsportvision.co.uk (and I suspect elsewhere) about why Russia and Japan are missing.

qualifying and the race will be interesting if free practice time is curtailed further by dodgy weather...
