What were the reasons given behind BMW leaving the BTCC?

Err, 'cos they were **** in 96? Probably wanted to concentrate on STW Cup instead.

Mainly because of the weight penaltys they had for running rear wheel drive.

I think the official line was to return home to Germany and compete in their home championship.
But unofficially, they were totally p****d at TOCA, simply because (watch the tape and see what you think) everytime there was 'contact' between them and normally Renault. the blame was laid at the feet of BMW. BMW felt that some blame should have been apportioned to Renault, Look at at the Thruxton crash and tell me who you think was to blame. I think 1996 Championship was penciled in for Menu, and a lot of people were disappionted and tried to make it right. |
