A little more on the Lotus 58 turbine car if my memory seves...
After the tragic loss of Jochen Rindt in the Type 72 at Monza in 1970, I seem to remember Lotus entering a single 58 in the same race the following year. To avoid legal wrangles over JR's accident the team was entered as "Worldwide Racing" and the car was painted gold with a black nose. Can anyone confirm please? Cheers Peter |

Two Connaughts both weird and wonderful:- the B- series streamliner from 1955 (remember the dinky toy version?) and the later (1957?) Tooth paste tube bodied car.
Another was the one and only Tec Mec, not finished until late 1959, fitted with a 250F Maser engine. Underfunded and underdeveloped and by that time, having its engine in the wrong place, it only appeared at the last GP (Sebring) of the season where it completed just 6 laps. Later restored by Tom Wheatcroft, I have since seen it at a number of historic events including the Goodwood Revival. |

Not exactly weird but imaginative. Tyrell run 2 front wheels at the rear on practice for the 1996 german GP. Salo told that it was meant to be faster for qualifying, and Katayama did his best time of the day with that configuration. They had to change the gearing, suspension and underbody planck. Unfortunately, that car developed a water leak and had to be abandoned. Tyrell= no money, but always imaginative... Shame thay went out.

Connaught was the first team to have thier own wind tunnel and the B series was the first car to be tested in that tunnel |

I have had the pleasure of a guided tour of the Williams Mueseum at Grove and there is indeed a six-wheeler. All of the cars in the muesuem afre in fact kept in full working order which is an impressive featr itself. There is even a Ferrari F1 car in there given as part of a negotiation with Ferrari and Jean Alessi.
I know that Panther Cars worked on a six wheeler road car in the 80's. |

[Peter, do we actually mean type 58]
Hi John... yes you are absolutely right, it was the 56b. My old dislexia is playing up again... Also I found a site that has illustration profiles of many Lotus F1 cars including the 56b, that may be worth a gander... www.f1-legend.com Thanks and cheers Peter |

How about double rear wings, some samples:
Quirky looking but relatively good car Toleman TG183B If this car didn't have wings it would look like Formula Ford, lack of sidepods making the impression: Ligier JS21 This double wing car was disqualified later from the results of Long Beach 1982 race: Ferrari 126C2 Someone mentioned odd front wing of the March 711 car, here's Ronnie Peterson in Monaco GP with March More conventional looking, but similar placement: Theodore TY 01 |

Hi Robert
agreed. It was classed as a movable aero device and was removed rather than an outright ban. Also... 429CJ and IL LEONE... Great pics. This stroll down memory lane is turning into a real route march. It makes me miss the time designers had a lot more freedom. Thanks. Cheers Peter |
