Almost 35 years.
Just began to think about my dear friend Roger Williamson. I say just began, but really that's not true, I never really stop talking about him, whenever someone mentions racing, and the talk begins, I always say that I knew two really great drivers, and they're both gone now. Roger Williamson was a mate, a friend that I used to see regularly at either the garage or the circuits, and as everyone knows I bought the famous Anglia from him. On the 29th of this month he will have been dead for 35 years, and as usual I will go up to Donington to just stand by the statue, and recall all the laughs we had, and imagine that beaming smile. He was a real "head down" out and out racer, wet or dry he had that special something they call "the will to win", it was a gift. I never quite achieved that. I used to ask Rog' how to approach a particular bend at a particular circuit and he would advise me; without those bits of advice I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I did. To say I miss him is too light, for to me, he was what I wanted to be like, he was a hero of mine. I was in the commentary box at Mallory Park when Ron Overend came in and asked me to sit down as he had some bad news...........
So, please on the 29th of July, spend a few minutes to remember Rog' a true racer and a great mate to have.
Gerry Taylor.
