People are simply losing interest in the modern style of car racing.
In my opinion, the solution to this is to appeal to the public's fascination with Technology and electronic gizmos.
Race cars need to be awesome marvels of modern engineering. The current trend of cars that are more of an appliance, simply a means of going racing, just isn't capturing the public's imagination anymore.
Of all the types of American Motorsport, sports car racing is the best suited to survive into the future.....IF it's taken in the right direction.

People aren't losing interest in modern car racing, the vast majority of America is losing interest in the automobile itself! As you said its becoming more of an appliance than anything, I blame it all on the smart phone and this new era it introduced of "I" this and "me" that.every one is to distracted by their damn smart phones now a days to be bothered by anything else.cars are now used to get from here to there, not as fast as possible but as comfortable as possible.fact is performance isn't selling cars anymore,it's all the useless junk options that sells cars now.people don't care if it's a pushrod v8 or a state of the art overhead cam with twin independent variable valve timing and high pressure Bosch direct injection system. No! All people care is if it will sync with their iPhone, has navigation,Bluetooth, heated and cooled seats,DVD,power everything from pedals to the damn tail gate on the new f150.cars are so advanced now they can pretty much drive them selfs, and if it passes and the law allows self driving cars.well that will be the death of the automobile in America, and say good by to racing.until the American public's interest in cars changes or goes back to what it was just twenty years ago, all motorsports will slowly die off.
