Space in the Garage - MY CHANCE for a Classic
Bill has just sold and got rid of the Morris Traveller taking up half the garage.
When he sold the MG I thought I would gain space but, no, it was filled with the Bond Equipe. So - now the other half of garage is free, I'm wondering if this is my chance to buy an old car....... Anybody got any thoughts on a suitable oldish car for a girl who doesn't want to spend any time under the bonnet? |

You always spend time under the bonnet of an old car.
Sorry Bill, will spend the time under the bonnet of the car. |

Mini! Proper old style mini at that. Or an Austin Healy Sprite. Those would be my two choices...

Triumph Herald with the flip front. You won't have to get under the bonnet then, you can sit on top of the engine, you might enjoy that!

i've always had a hankering for something a bit different, like a Ford Edsel or a Morris Marina.
Designs way ahead of their time, cars built by craftsmen, not robots !! |

Depends on your definition of classic
You could go for an Austin 1100 or even the even better Austin Allegro Seriously depends what you are looking for Whats wrong with a proper mark 1 Escort Mexico or a Lotus Cortina if you want a bit a speed |

As a classic, my choice would be an MG Midget

A few good suggestions already - Escort Mexico if you can find one, Lotus Cortina if you don't mind paying silly money, Pug 205GTi definitely!
A few more suggestions - a properly-sorted 70s Alfa Spider (I see you as a latter-day Mrs Robinson!); now wait for the cliches about rust & unreliability. . . Porsche 924, or even better a 944. Good value as they are not "real Porsches"! Mercedes coupe or convertible? One of my favourites: Lancia Fulvia coupe. Take a look at an MGB then see how much better you can do for the same money! |

Unless of course you have 'a man who will spend time under the bonnet.' That does compute. Similarly, equating 'Morris Marina' with the word 'craftsmanship' has caused this program to perform an illegal function and I will now close down. |

In my youth I've driven 7 year old Cortinas (my newest car at the time) , a 15 year old Austin Cambridge with a customised one-wheel braking system, a Cortina Mk 1 whose headlights kept falling out of their sockets, and a Riley Kestrel in which I had to avoid holes in the road because the rear subframe was only connected to the car by gravity. And I cherish them all, except the Marina, which was, without a shadow of any doubt, the greatest mechanical abortion ever produced by British Leyland, or any other manufacturer including Skoda. There! I've said it! Hurrah! After 25 years I am released of the burden. OK, nurse I'll go back to bed now. Yippee! |

I did in fact, own a Marina for a few short weeks (needs must). It did humankind a great favour late one Sunday night on the A1 near St neots, when the engine blew up big time.
It was still running so I carried on in an orderly manner until stopped by a 'boy in blue' who passed the comment that perhaps the car was trying to tell me something. My other great service to humankind was putting a Maestro on its roof. |

Aagh! Most of the cars you're describing as classics I sold them new! Marinas, Cortinas, Escorts, Peugeots. I remember selling an E-Type "new" from the showroom that was at least 12 months old - we couldn't shift them towards the end of their life and this one was a "doom blue" V12 2+2, what's that worth today? I must say, looking back, my favourites were the early RS Escorts, especially mk1 Mexicos - they had a wonderfull poise and balance as an everyday road car, if only you could find one that hasn't been messed with.

Shelagh, you've already got a classic. It's called Bill. Bit worn around the edges but a reasonable runner given a little TLC!
How about a Sunbeam Tiger? Or a Hillman Imp. I have fond memories of a Hillman Imp. |
