Algarve Historic Festival: (Portimao): 2013
Is there any news regarding the likelihood of this event taking place this year? I've read about the financial difficulties facing the circuit operators/investors, anyone have any up to date news?

There are several organisers with races scheduled for the event. MRL, Lurani and Automobiles Historiques to name but 3. I will be racing in GT&SCC and looking forward to it as always!

Thanks for that, planning a late break so it would be good to see some sunshine and some real cars. It has to be warmer than Thruxton! Is there a website anywhere that you know of?

As Mon Ami says.....
I look at as 'no news is good news!' When talking to racing people at other meetings they are all organised to be there, most at Jerez the weekend before as well. It is the most costly European meeting to get a car to, and yet demand for transport is probably highest of any. Helps that budget airlines fly into Faro and hotels are not overpriced. If the usual deal for competitors of some complimentary nights happens again even more incentive to race there. My take is that circuit will still be in operation, as will the kart track, but not expecting much in way of maintenance or repairs to have been carried out. And doubt if any work on all the big projects behind the circuit. (Apartments, hotel etc.) Biggest disappointment last year was that the small cafe bar on the outside of the circuit had closed down. They were a great couple running it and would stay open and cook for you in the evening if asked. AND they sold proper icecream....... Hopefully Iain will remember where he got the takeaway pizzas from. See you there! |

Best get this thread back onto first page before someone starts another one...
Confirmed grids according to organisers are- MRL 50s Sports Cars. (Combined Woodcote and SM Trophy.) 120 minute race Saturday evening. MRL Historic Touring Car Challenge. 2 x 30 minute races. MRL Pre-War Sports Cars. 2 x 30 minute races. GTSCC. 120 minute race Sunday. FIA Lurani Trophy for Formula Junior cars. 2 races. All drivers get 4 nights accommodation included in entry fees at the Hotel Algarve Casino. 5 star on the beach at Praia da Rocha. Or you can sleep in a truck at the circuit like some do....... |

My Lurani entry is in, although entries look a bit slow, hope they pick up.
Seems I have been harbouring one misunderstanding, not sure where I'd got it from ... Having never been there before, I had thought that the hotel was 'on site', (I assumed like Nurburgring) but the hotel they've kindly given us is actually quite a distance a way, so is there a shuttle bus or car service (a la Porto)? Or should I be hiring a car?! |

Bicycle!
James, a hire car is best option. Circuit is a way from Faro airport as well. One year they did have a hotel shuttle but doubt funds will rise to such things again! Maybe as an alternative share a hire car with another racer. Not sure if the planned hotel behind circuit, along with the apartments, has progressed at all for last couple of years.... |

Announced a couple of days ago that the Portugese government has bought the circuit from Parkalgar through it's investment arm Portugal Capital Ventures.
Hopefully that will increase confidence in the facility among the racing fraternity! No mention of the apartment and hotel development, though. |

Almost time, just distraction of Jerez on the way to cope with! Timetable and entry list for GTSCC received. Good grid (24) for the race, which may not sound that impressive until compared with Masters GD at Jerez- 14 cars. More F1!
Can't post links to info but if anyone wants to see timetable, PM me email address and will forward. Also still looking to sell on my complementary hotel accommodation- 4 nights in 5 star at Praia da Rocha. At mutually beneficial rate, naturally.... |

Algarve Classic Festival
Hi all,
As a local Portuguese guy and driver at every Algarve Classic Festivals ever done, let me help out in what I can. HRSTR5 please be carefull. There is no shuttle from Faro Airport or shuttle from the Hotel and Circuit. Only the Taxi Ride cost from Airport to Portimao is enought to pay for a cheap rent a car for days, and rent a cars are very cheap in this time of the year. All news say the circuit was bought by the Portuguese government, very good news as Motor Fan, not so go as a Portuguese Tax paxer... Last year it rained on Sunday only. It was not normal thought, as was the first time in 4 years. Grids number are not so high this year, but will be interesting weekend with 7 grid and 11 races schedule. I cannot complain. I will be organizing the Iberian "Historic Endurance" for late 60's and 70's GT and Touring cars and the grid is already full with the maximum 50 cars allowed. Already having a race in Jerez the previous weekend, but "only" 31 cars going. Please if you will be at Portimao, come say hi! Regards Diogo |

Have you put in a protest about the winners Mike?
I think that's what is supposed to happen isn't it? |

Thanks John- the Abarth is still quicker around a lap, but doesn't always have a trouble free run, as you know!
We finished third on the road, but Nolte and Stippler were given a 60 second penalty that promoted us to P2 and Buncombe / Ward to P3. Loads of penalties during race for lots of people, but we kept nose clean. I was on pit wall for MRL race evening before and saw what was happening then, so we drove accordingly.... I drove my socks off for that result. Also got fastest class lap. (And the car owner did bloody well, considering he had a stomach bug all weekend!) Last edited by Mike Bell; 21 Oct 2013 at 17:35. |
