Aston Martin to make 25 Continuation Lightweight DB4 GTs
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/car...price-tag.html
According to the report these marginally pricey offerings are for track only. And all are sold. I wonder if they will come with FIA papers? |

The news item mention 'improvements' in engine performance, handling, braking and safety, so there could be enough deviation from original spec to scupper HTPs.... Nothing that couldn't be sorted, though, I'm sure! From my limited knowledge of DB4s, I believe it's possible to create a 'GT' from a normal car, and that used to be a less expensive route to racing one with papers than buying a genuine car. Perhaps not now with the price even barn find cars fetch! |

Insuppose that was only a matter of time, Ferrari will be next with a load of 250GTO's/LM's Then that's pretty much every GT car with half a chance covered.

I think Ferrari are the one manufacturer that wouldn't sanction 'continuation' cars. Having witnessed first hand their Classiche department in operation, they take their heritage extremely seriously.....

On the other hand if enough "collectors" with deep enough pockets expressed an interest ....

No. IMHO it would not change their viewpoint! Problem with AM, Jaguar, Lister and others is that (to simplify) the cars they sell today share the original name, but the company has changed ownership several times. I know Ferrari were 50% bought by Fiat in 1969, but Enzo was still in charge until his death in 1988. Nowadays it is at least 90% a stand alone company.

It wasn't until Ferrari Spotters started counting how many they'd seen that it turned out they'd made about 1,315 of them!! |

Yes, agreed, but continuing a production run beyond the number intended is not the same as producing more cars 50 years later!

But you're probably right, given they can lift a couple of million from people who want strange one-offs and their main business of selling branded stuff must be hugely profitable so why bother. |

The aforementioned Breadvan was refused full 'Classiche' certification, and despite most of the time being called a Ferrari, does not wear a prancing horse badge.... |

The DB4 GTs "continuation" could be eligible for papers if they comply to the true period specification of the original ones.
On Ferrari and the "Classiche" business, well, when they scrap an original engine block to replace it with a new one just to sell parts and re-tag it with original number or do not take the time to truly restore an interior and prefer to fit all new leather from the affiliated leather company brand, or even ask some owners to have the original, period accidented and repaired coachwork to be scrapped so it is brought back to a full Ferrari one, one has to question their understanding of originality. What mainstream owners see in Classiche is a way to have it 100% Ferrari compliant for the dumb people that now buy these sort of cars as opposed to the true collectors who look for originality rather than paperwork..! |

Some mags have included a wonderful period shot of the late great Jack Sears drifting a DB4GT through a corner. I wonder if the new cars will adopt the same attitude mid bend!

Perhaps the upgrades will include a drift button that allows the driver to decide what angle of drift the car adopts, as featured on several current "driver's cars"!
