Here's a geeky Horlicks/Ovaltine question for you: In which country are these two drinks banned?
Answer: Denmark, which has legislation forbidding the sale of food products with added vitamins as threats to public health - like me, you can probably think of far worse threats than milky bedtime drinks... They've also banned Marmite which is, in my eyes, unforgivable so in return Danish bacon, butter and anything else they produce worth consuming (is there anything?) are banned from my supermarket trolley. |

Talking of Denmark did I tell about our VIP dinner we had when out at Copenhagen Historic G P.The dinner was in a lift and all the food was supplied from the garden that was on top of the building . There were about seven courses of all this green stuff and the waiter explained to us about what the food was and how it was cooked . It was a brilliant evening one that I shall never forget . When we had finished some four hours plus later our host shut the doors on the lift and we all went down . There was 20 of us . Happy days . 😀

Would have been a bit cosy in a normal people lift. Talking of lifts, I was dragged into Nottingham a couple of times before Christmas. The the John Lewis store as management wanted to buy some new curtains, the Living Room having been redecorated. So after all of the aggro of finding any material that was anything near what she was looking for (this happens every single time she does any interior decorating despite a lot of on-line research and sample gathering first - it was the same with paint colours and wallpaper) we went through the laborious process of actually ordering something on their computer system, which was not working very well on the day. Not hearing anything after several weeks (on a 7 day confirmation process) she got a message out of the blue to say the curtains were not going to be made as the wholesaler had withdrawn the chosen material because it was crap. So I was dragged back a second time to go through it all again with the computer system not working once more, etc., etc. The only suitable material was even more expensive but, given the service had failed to meet expectations and there was no way they would be delivered "in time for Christmas" they agreed to leave the price as was. Still incredibly expensive in my opinion but better than paying the extra. So they arrived in 2 boxes, unannounced, a few days ago. And of course the first response on opening them was that she hates the material, the colour (its almost colourless material) and subsequently, having hung one pair, the way they hang. All of those responses being entirely normal and one of the reasons why I really hate redecorating anything. Anyway, the point of the story is really about lifts. John Lewis in Nottingham is in a large old shopping centre, in the centre of the City, which has an underground car park and JL's lifts go all the way down to the car park. Very convenient if you park in the right part of the labyrinth so long as you have enough nous left after shopping to find a way out. On both trips, one during the week and the other on a Sunday, the lift seemed to take an age to get anywhere and when it appeared was rammed full of "pram" pushers who seemed to have no idea about how to manoeuvre a pram/pushchair to extricate it from the packed lift. Absolutely no clue at all. Arriving for the second visit, when a lift finally appeared having stopped at every floor on the way down for some minutes ( I have no idea where the other two lifts got to - they seemed not to be moving at all) no one got off in the car park. I suspect they had all shoved in somewhere above just because the doors opened and on the basis that at least they now had possession of space on a lift even if it was going in the wrong direction. The shops were not at all busy on the days we were there so I assume the visitors, mostly, had no real purpose and were therefore not entirely focussed on what they were doing. "Sunday driver" syndrome. Both visits were also memorable for a lack of staff cover in the department we visited and that was made worse by the awful and very slow (when it worked at all) computer ordering system. All made worse still by having to drive into Nottingham which is one of the least car friendly cities in the UK. The only plus point was that I didn't notice any errant disposable coffee cups being touted around. Plenty of drinks bottles but no coffee cups. Probably banned as too dangerous to go up and down in a pushchair filled lift. All told a very unwelcome experience that I will be doing my best to avoid in the future. |

Horlicks As others have said, brings back memories of my youth. I used to enjoy eating the stuff straight off the spoon (as I did with Carburys Drinking Chocolate), bust as Mum didn't approve, I have to be careful not to get caught. The number of times I was caught and swallowed the dust quickly causing me to cough a Horlicksy or Choclately mess into the kitchen! (I suppose that this is where the phrase 'making a Horlicks out of it' comes from?)

All fiction is escapism, isn't it John? Even Shakespeare wrote 'science fiction' - The Tempest for example. Perhaps he was under the influence of a very milky Horlicks...

Escapism works for me, although some films (including several Star Wars episodes) are too long. Give me a clever animation with a good story and it will usually hit the spot!

We now have our new central heating boiler up and running, which has kept me involved for a few days, so not taking too much concern on what has been happening here during my absence.
What do I find when I take a look at the Delta bit? For goodness sake do you lot have nothing better to do during on off season, than to spend so much time discussing the merits of milky drinks, and taking my name in vain? Where are the Mods? Why are they not putting a stop to this torrent of trivia? The world is going to wrack and ruin around us, but all one reads here are of matters of little consequence to the international community, and World Peace. I drink a lot of Ovaltine as I can buy it cheaply from the local discount store, and Swiss drinking chocolate for the same reason. Does it aid restful sleep? I don't know but it makes a change from tea and coffee. I would not care for Delta's Dad's tea, my taste is for something more refined, such as a nice Ceylon or Orange Pekoe. Ah! A nice ginger biscuit goes well with a decent cuppa, although a chocy biccy is a good alternatrive. Note to self; Must find out when does the season starts. |

Mon Ami Robert, we're working hard to prepare this season. We have a project to join old guys forces and make a team with an Escort RS 1800 entered in HTC series. I really hope it will work as intended, we could be the senior team in this series both being more than 60.
I'm really excited but scared about my abilities to get used to the hard braking of a Group 2 car. So many races with 911's in two litre plus my Capri taught me not to rely on the brakes to stop! In this respect there is always a nice guy in front of you to help… First thing, inflate my bike's tires ! |

Surprised no mention on here regarding the passing of Ray Thomas the other day. I had The Moody Blues Days of Future Past ‘concept’ album on vinyl when it was current and now have it on CD. Along with the LSO version of Tommy and Pink Floyd’s The Wall, probably the most listened to music in my small collection...

Nope, John, calendar is Peter Auto's. May be Mike would tell you that Croix is not "in or hype" enough to those gentlemen's eyes sometimes rather show off oriented. That why its fun to try to beat them with a total budget lower than what they spend fo cover their hotels bills. They have at least one client racing in several series who says each weekend costs him around 50 000 €. Anyway, we share the same tents, track and cafeteria. Big differences arrive with tires we use and the revs we allow ourselves to spare some pennies. Well, GBP's!

I have no knowledge of Croix, but experience from the last couple of seasons suggests that a large enough paddock to house all the tents is high priority when choosing destinations! One or two circuits are beginning to struggle...

I guess in the days when it was hosting French F3, touring cars etc, needs were more modest! I suppose the biggest event these days is Rallye Ternois, which bases itself there for the event & has around 90 competitors. |

Sure Mike the lost of Jarama is painful to me. Croix is more karting oriented but offers an atmosphere egal to none.

I have very happy memories racing at Croix. Won a race there many years ago.The owner /manager races with us in FJ. As was said very nice man.
Best story is of our very first visit. We all decided to walk, bike around track to learn the lay out. My mate turned up late at night and decided to go around track in his motor home. We spent some time getting his bus out which got stuck under the bridge. Think we let the tyres down in the end.Happy days. |
