It wouldn't bug me so much, but Belle Isle seems to get an inordinate amount of it, and the items I listed are the main culprits as far as opt-cited "reasons" for the ire towards the venue.
And I'm just going "Really?". This isn't the downtown Detroit street circuit, the Caesar's Palace carpark, Fair Park (1984), Phoenix (F1), San Antonio (1987-88), New Orleans (1991), Bayfront Park (2002-03), the 2005 iteration of San Jose, Houston (Reliant Park), or Long Beach (1982-91). I could include more if I go into Trans-Am (like Grand Rapids, Niagara Falls, and the 1988 version of Fair Park), but you get the picture. Anyway, if there are still going to be 17 races in 2019, then there's got to be something else new/returning coming along. I think we've already taken a definite step up with the move from the IndyCar layout at Sonoma to Laguna Seca. |

I have certainly enjoyed the Detroit races the past few years.

Toyota will not renew its title sponsorship of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, after 44 years. A new title sponsor is being sought for next year.

IndyCar has signed a new multi-year agreement with Texas Motor Speedway, despite the series being in talks with COTA, who host the United States Grand Prix Formula 1 at Austin. |

I'd rather have them race at COTA. That's how much I don't like Texas Speedway...

It's not the worst of the Tilkedromes, then again the layout was conceived by the promoter Tavo Hellmund and 1993 Motorcycle World Champion Kevin Schwantz.

In the 80s CART raced in Cleveland and Mid Ohio and both races were well attended for years though only 85 miles apart. TMS and COTA are more than twice that distance apart, and with much bigger population bases at each end. No idea whether an Indycar race at COTA would work financially for all concerned but there are certainly plenty of Texans in close proximity that can afford the ticket. TMS frankly scares me as an Indycar track. Can we move them to Rattlesnake if COTA doesn't work out?

It's looking like it will be Austin going in in the Phoenix slot.

Good schedule, if they fix the car it might be a good season again next year.

St Pete is one week before the Sebring 12h and Sebring 1000.
Austin is one week before the Nascar Texas race. Barber is one week before the Augusta Masters. Laguna Seca is one week before the IMSA race. Sad to see just five ovals. |

It could do with one more oval and expand the schedule to 18 races but which oval?

Richmond seems like the most promising market.

Richmond for sure. That would be grand!
*EDIT* Heres a question that I've been pondering for the last few weeks; what are the odds of Road Atlanta ever making it on to the Indycar Calendar? What would/has been preventing it from happening? Last edited by Nick Woodbury; 4 Sep 2018 at 16:58. |

Its getting close to the time to expand the schedule for more of everything; 20 races is a nice round number. The series is gaining enough traction to not have to worry too much about conflicts of other sports.

For starters, I'm sure IndyCar would require more debris fencing at Road Atlanta.
For the sake of the variety of shapes of ovals they have, and to get an honest to goodness one-miler, I'd like to see New Hampshire in there again. I have nothing against Richmond, but it rather resembles Iowa, which is already on the calendar. Also, I do wonder a little about lap times and speeds around there, and the ability to avoid trouble when something goes wrong; these cars should be faster than the last generation to race at Richmond. Canada certainly deserves a second race, but with Toronto covered, it becomes a question of where. The only other permanent road course of note is Mont Tremblant. I'd want to see how Austin goes before seriously considering Mexico City anyway. I'm concerned that with the downforce reduction, some of those corner sequences may not work that well. There are also just a lot of single-line corners around the lap at Austin. You really can't pass in a single-class situation from Turn 3 to T9. The same goes for the "stadium", unless you start putting all four over the white lines; policing track limits is going to be fun. I know it's not that likely for the time being, but I'd really rather have 17 races at 17 different venues, instead of 17 races on 16 configurations of 15 venues. Seeing Laguna Seca and Portland back, and watching some of the old CART races again, I'm missing having a 3.0-km, trapezoidal oval in there. (Yes, I know, Rio was built over for the Pan American Games, World Cup, and Summer Olympics venues.) Anyway, that's 5 ovals, 4 temporary circuits, and 7 road courses. I'll be interested to see which races, aside from the 500, get network NBC coverage. |
