Yep - the manufacturers don't contribute to the series at all financially but of course do assist teams. There'd need to be something of an austerity process to deal with no manufacturers if it went that way and having a plan for better revenue streams to replace the manufacturer money would be part of the plan too I would think.

The Virgin Australia Supercars series is becoming an irrelevance. IMO they should do something about that...

Sticking to Holden vs Ford, seems like the worst solution possible IMO.. Given that the public these days aspire to own a wide range of different cars from a Toyota Hilux 4x4 to a Nissan GTR to a Mercedes C43 AMG to a Suzuki Vitara to a Porsche Macan GTS to a MINI Cooper JCW to a Nissan Juke to Mazda CX9 to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifologio, rather than a duopoly of HDT/HSV/Commodore or Falcon models. |

Some insight into the differences between three of the categories up for discussion.

"So it's pretty neat how [the TCR cars] make the speed up, ...they are probably more fun to drive because ... you can really push the limits..." "They are so fun to drive," he summarizes. "It resembles so much of the street car version and that's where we all got into this as kids. When I was in high school the Civic Si had come out and I wanted one of those so bad. If you saw something like a TCR at that time, you would have been excited as hell." A great endorsement of the TCR concept, even if they sound atrocious compared to the old iconic Super Tourers, as raced by Neils on Wheels so famously. I was at the first round of the British TCR championship. Suffers from low numbers, so difficult to say what the racing would be like with a bigger field, but individually the cars are exceptionally dull to watch. Like most high-tech front wheel drive cars, they are only really interesting when going off.

But there is little that can be done. Cheap compact rear-drive cars mostly don't exist^, and the manufacturers of prestige upmarket compact rear-drive cars mostly haven't shown an interest in creating a touring car class for their vehicles (whether it be a four, six or eight cylinder category or a BOP mixture of the three (with turbos) at 500 to 600bhp) . A support class (and nothing more) with both GT4 and TCR BOP'ed together could go some way to give fans like yourself rear drive thrills and hot hatch fans like VW and Honda enthusiasts the ability to both find something interesting in the same race? You do know a (proper) V8 engine is just two four cylinder engines joined together?
Four cylinders can sound great, especially on the induction side like this Renault, remarkably similar to how a (proper flat crank) V8 sounds (fancy that, it's almost like it's just half a V8 engine...). The exhaust side does tend to sound a bit pants though, that's true. It's the turbo of TCR which is the problem, and V8 engines with turbos can sound dreadful too, like the McLaren GT3 for example: https://youtu.be/lYZFFIkxZOM?t=4m Sadly, turbocharging is inevitable. I understand your point Fireworks about VW or Honda enthusiasts but I don't think they'd find TCR too exciting either as overall it lacks excitement. For us here in Oz, with many of our tracks being shorter, bumpier and having more tight corners, fwd cars have typically suffered in comparison to rwd or awd competitors in the same field. That is likely to only exacerbate the dullness of TCR. |

Tell that to the likes of Tarquini and Giovanardi who have happily raced them for decades, or even Bob Holden who willingly kept racing his "front bagger" AE82 Group A Corolla for 30 years instead of his perfectly good rear bagger AE86 Group A Corolla.
Heck it's such a snooze that Mr Cleland couldn't possibly muster any enthusiasm to pay his own money to race one... Oh wait. |

On the same bill we had the Honda Civics which should have been dull but weren't. Quite challenging, more than a little lairy, and huge packs of them trading positions. If I were going to choose which to watch there's no competition. On the other hand a huge diverse field of historics topped the lot, and I'm not particularly a fan of old cars. |

The handling of the various home-made Civics will certainly be lacking compared to the highly developed Civic TCR with so much attention lavished on it by JAS motorsport -- hence more action. PS. How could they ever be dull? They are all VTEC gems with 8600rpm rev limits from the factory (and 9000rpm plus with some hot cams and oil pump upgrades! ). |
