Colin McRae - WRC's Jean Alesi?
I know you can't really compare F1 and rally drivers, but I've noticed that Colin McRae and Jean Alesi both have all out attacking driving styles, they both have the occasional big accident, and they even both through the odd tantrum, although Colin's are not as extreme as Jean's. What do you think?

Nah. While it's not really a fair or favorable comparison, Alesi and his countryman Delacour are the closest parralels I can think of.

Yep, I saw an old footage when Delacour and Panizzi were at each other's throats a few years back at Peugeot.

Delacours outburst on the Rally GB, when he had a go at his co-driver for them crashing. I know I have a go at Nicky Grist everytime I crash on Colin Mcrea rally, because it can't be my fault!!!!!!

No, Colin McRae isn't the Jean Alesi of Rally. He is the Pedro Diniz of Rally.

Liz, that is CRUEL!!!
At least Colin's never had his family buy a 40% stake in a team to get him a ride! Last edited by Lee Janotta; 8 Jan 2003 at 02:51. |

McRae has never chased anyone through the forest shouting "I WEEL KEEL YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" which I saw Alesi chase Trulli through the infield at Montreal shouting that once ... it is true that McRae never had to buy a ride but I am sure if his name were not so well known -- wait, his brother is kind of relegated now, isn't he?
No, I think it's true. McRae = Diniz. |

Exactly, McRae has won more World Championship rallies than anyone.

Ah Another Forum another McRae basher.
Yes McRae has had spectacular crashes but who hasn't in rallying ? Even Gronholm managed one last year. The comparison with Delacour is more accurate for sure. Spectacular, fiery and never quite achived his potential. It's almost spot on. |

I can't believe that rally folk are using F1 comparisons. Shame on you!
As for comparing C.McRae to a F1 no hoper.... do you know anything about rallying at all? |

No hoper? Excuse me, but Jean Alesi has an F1 win (Montreal 1995 with Ferrari) and _many_ podiums to his credit, including a spectacular second place at Phoenix in 1990, where he dueled for several laps with Ayrton Senna in, of all things, a Tyrrel-Cosworth!

I think you have all missed the most appropriate comparison. To me McRae is the Nigel Mansell of Rallying - His on track style and off track personality are very similar

Here is one for the McRae bashers (and Liz in particular)
If Alesi is the F1 equivalent of McRae, then Jacques is the F1 equivalent of Burns. Both competent drivers whose one and only world championship came from being in the best car at the right time. Both then moved on to new teams as part of big buck contracts and were overwhelmingly disappointing. I heard Burns was wingeing to his mechanics that the 206 was set up all wrong for the Monte - but shock, his was set up the same as Gronholm's. No excuses now Richard. |

McRae makes rallying great to watch, overdriving, pushing the limits as far as possible, and then some, aswell as a never say die attitude. Im a fan of Australian Rally driver Simon Evans because of the same things, he makes ralling good to watch, if a crash or two (or more) comes from this then so what?

I actually meant Diniz was the no-hoper although I wasn't clear. I am a great fan of Colin and I can't see any F1 comparisons being appropriate. Colin McRae is one of the sports greats.

Colin McRae was the Villeneuve of WRC, always hanging it out and sometimes succeeding and sometimes not getting away with it

A bit harsh some of these comments, Gilles was involved in a terrible accident and did not "kill" himself, he was taking a risk yes, but in those days there was so little safety and the cars were deathtraps.
Colin it has to be said, was silly and was responsible for other deaths, and for me that will always take a little away from his legacy. |
