Wayne Gardner to Hang up the helmet - sort of.
On www.waynegardner.com there is a news flash, stating that Wayne Gardner has retired from Racing , but still would like to compete at and Maybe one day win Bathurst.
Good Luck Wayne !!!! Good Luck with the Bathurst Thing - Dont forget to ask Ross and Jimmy Stone for a reference, so you can get the next Bathurst Gig. |

I Noticed the article says he started his Car Racing in 1993. Thats the year he was with HRT and got the Captain Chaos Tag. But did he not race the Graham Moore Strathfield Car Radios Commodore at Bathurst in 1992 or is there 2 Wayne Gardners ?????

You're right Tool Man. I heard rumour he is going to run a team of Falcons in Brutes this year.

His car racing career started earlier than Bathurst 1992, he drove a BMW M3 in a round of the 1992 German Touring Car Championship (DTM).

He also tried to qualify a Shrike in the 1990 FH AGP support race, but crashed at the chicane during qualifying, and then had another car crash into the wreck. The car couldn't be fixed in time for the races. |

He had a test of a Lotus F1 car in 1992 or 1993 as well didn't he? With a view of competing in that years AGP.

Another icon of Australian motorsport fades away. I suppose though, he knows when to retire. Being a motorcyclist, and a fan of Gardner since watching him win the Castrol 6 hour in the wet in the 70s, it's always sad to see your "heroes" retire from the public spotlight.

I'm with mgt. I remember watching Gardner at Amaroo then at Oran Park in Castrol 6 Hour races. Great spectacles. Some of the best most fun times I have had at the track.
Wayne made as all proud in '87. Sure he can be unsufferable and pig headed but there you go. His performance a few years ago getting pole and leading the race in the FTR car was with the price of admission, if a little short lived. Say mjt, good to see another motorcyclist on the boards. |

I'm sad to see him go, i was a fan of his.
Maybe some won't agree, but i believe he was one of the better drivers in Touring Cars, it's just that he was stuck running his underfunded team for 4 years, and was with HRT when it was abit of a joke of a team, and he was in his first full year of touring cars. |
