A friend of mine's just had to humanely terminate an Allegro. A testament to that little orange loony is that at one point, they had a Landrover, a Golf, a Ducati and the Allegro... and the only roadworthy one of the lot was the Allegro
I guess it depends what you mean by 'sensible' really - personally I'd never describe anything the size of a Corsa as sensible. I hate small cars. However I've driven all sorts of hire cars and company cars for work over the years. Sticking to fairly recently... Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 JTS (kind of sensible, and very very good) Fiat Brava (unrelentingly terrible, no redeeming features whatsoever) Fiat Stylo (slight improvement on the Brava, but the car to save Fiat? Oh dear ) Ford Focus (ok in an average kind of way) Vauxhall Astra (decent - better than the Focus for me) Vauxhall Vectra - prev model (does exactly what it says on the tin) Vauxhall Vectra - new model (does it better, except those indicators!) Peugeot 306 (old and tired, but decent kit) Peugeot 307 (perhaps I got a dodgy one, but nowhere near all it's cracked up to be) Among cars I've owned that I guess are 'sensible' are a couple of Imprezas (sensible?? ), a Primera GT (excellent), Mercedes E-class (solid & comfy), Senator 24v (probably my fave apart from the Scoobys...), a Maestro (awful), and right at the start a 1.6 mk2 Cavalier (not sure which was more green - me or the car)... We currently have a Mk2 Granada for our 'sensible' car. It's a 2.3Lx and was bought new in 1983 by my Father-In-Law. A good motorway car, very comfortable, loads of space, good towing car,25mpg on a good day
My first car was a very sensible cheap to insure Mk3 Escort 1100 Estate. I part-exchanged it for the Dutton mentioned in another thread....... |

Cars I've owned: Renault R5 (2) I'm a masochist. Actually fun to drive but the hamsters used to power it were hungry little guys.
Then nearly ten years later, a Saturn SL2-surprisingly nimble and forgiving, a complete delight if a little down on power. SAAB 900-on its last legs and tempermental, my wife loved it, I dreaded driving it. A slug in all ways that died a longed-for death on the Highway late at night. VW Passat wagon (I)- pleasant, by a tad down on power, and helped by wider tires and Mille Miglia wheels. I'd finally learned its quirks when Passat (II) replaced it in the stable-more power but more roll and none of the grace of its predesessor. VW Golf 1.8T-An absolute charmer-by cursed by the VW tendency to lean in the corners. I can't justify the expense of stiffer springs and an anti-rolll bar to my wife. |

We've had a Fiat cinquecento for ten years now to potter around London - its great and prettier than the seicento - they clearly last too from the amount you still see on the road - would I buy another ? Only when this one dies ! Had a Renault 5 in the eighties - splendid little car again - learnt on a Austin 1100 - did the job for me - various rental cars over the years - borrowed a colleague's XR3i once and hated everything about it - worst car I'd ever driven until I was lent a 924 whilst my 911 was in service

A very unsenseble car I drove was my Grandmother's 1968 Buick Electra 225, (even the name was big!) My parents had SAABs so driving the "Land Barge" was a very different experience. It handled like Supertanker in the Panama Canal but in a straight line, that whomping huge V8 was a gas-literally. I think it got 8-12 MPG.

What do people have against Saabs?! I had a Saab900 in england and loved it yet all my friends hated it... The handling isn't that bad and the engines are good. ANd the handbrakes are awesome! With all those nutters on the roads nowadays a Saab is the only safe car on the road IMO.

Nothing wrong with Saabs. I nearly bought one recently, then remembered I was about twenty years too young...
It's just that eventually they seem to get a bit like really old people. Totally decrepit, nothing works properly anymore, most of the bodywork has fallen off or been replaced, leaks fluid constantly, but somehow just keeps on going, seemingly forever... |

Nothing screams 'Mid life crisis' louder than a Saab convertible (in yellow of course).

Funnily enough never fancied a Saab convertible. I'm obviously not old enough yet

What are sensible cars? How about Ford Transits, VW Transporters and a LT, Nissan Urvan, Nissan KingCab, Nissan Vanette, couple of Toyota Hi-Aces, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200, Chevy Scottsdale, Chevy Astro, Chevy El Camino, Ford Laredo, Ford Ranchero, Dodge Dakota, Dodge Ram Van. Ford P100...them all vans and pick-ups, maybe that's sensible.

David, I grew up on SAABs, my parents had a 95, three 99's and a 900 as well as a Sonett III. I loved them. Its just that the 900 we got from my mother-in-law was a bit long in the tooth by the time it got to us. It was too heavy, handled like a pig. Some cars you like, some you don't. That one I hated.

oops maybe I shouldn't have used 'sensible'. I meant just ordinary, everyday road cars. Bit boring I know but was just interested.
Having read the above, I need to add bravo as well. The majority of mine are hire cars though - to try them out. |

Yes! I did indeed have a Talbot Tagora - metallic lime green with mustard-coloured leather seats. Lovely....!
SRG540Y was bought cheap, lasted me the summer, and then the head gasket and alternator went in quick succession. I think the bloke who bought it from me wanted it for banger racing. Hope he's alright... Sad to say (I think) I've only actually seen one other Tagora in the last six years. |

Partly through boredom and partly inspired by your very thorough lists, I'll have a go, though I'm sure to have missed some - smilies of some sort indicate ones I owned (all 16 of them) ...
Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 JTS Austin: Metro/Rover 100 (2), Maestro (2, a 1984 1.6 HLS was mine ) Fiat: Brava, Stylo Ford: Escort/Orion (at least 6, including a mk3 van my sister nicked), Focus, Mondeo Leyland National 40+ foot single decker bus! (the looooong one) Leyland DAF lwb van Mazda: 323 1.5, 626 2.0 Coupe Mercedes E320 Avantgarde Mercedes van (Transit type thing) Nissan: Bluebird 1.6 , Maxima 3.0 V6 SE , Primera 2.0 GT , 200SX Peugeot: 306, 307 (2) Subaru Impreza: 2.0 Sport (2, I broke the first one… ), Turbo 'Terzo' no. 265 , Impreza III WRX Sport Wagon Triumph: Acclaim auto, Spitfire mk4 1300 Vauxhall: Astra 1.4/1.6 (2), Cavalier (2, mk1 & mk2, both mine ), Senator CD 24v , Vectra 1.8 to 2.2 – at least 5 of, mk1 and mk2. And I’ve had mentionable but brief drives in an Alfa 33 Veloce, a Pug 205 GTi 1.9, a 2002 Impreza WRX STi, a very silly Mini, a Porsche 924 Turbo, a couple of Granadas, a Formula Vauxhall single seater and a Ferrari 550 Maranello... Mostly rather mundane, particularly compared with a work colleague who (with a little help from a privileged friend) has driven... Jaguar E Type, XK150, SS100 Lotus Esprit chassis no. 1 (from For Your Eyes Only) Aston Martin DB5 (From Goldeneye), Aston Martin DBS (From HMSS), Aston Martin Vantage (From The Living Daylights) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang KITT The A-Team Van Postman Pat's Van Fiat Gamini "Last of the V8's..." - Max's Car from Mad Max 2. The Munsters Coach...from the TV series None of which are remotely sensible, but hey... Last edited by garcon; 22 Jul 2003 at 11:04. |
