Thanks Bondy, thats encouraging, i'm being told the clunking is not going to be fixed, i'm meeting the State Ford Tech Manager on Wed and he's going to receive a full on complaint
Had a diff clunk in an earlier model limo equipped XR, added Redline friciton modifier to the diff oil and it was quite as a mouse after that. |

If you want to fix the noise in the diff, You need to use a Mobil oil called Mobilube SHC ID. It is worth $140 for 5 litres but it is the only thing that will quiten the diff down

My Dad had an AU1 XR6 sedan and he was so worried about the diff clunk, he sold the car.

It is just an oil problem. This oil has been used in ALL HSV diff's since VN Group A

Thanks again colin, I will mention it to the Ford guy.
The problem is the BA XR's have a firmer diff mounting compared to other models, any driveline slack noise is transmitted up into the body and amplified. Auto XR owners may experience it when the TC is locked up in 4th and remove foot from accelerator. |

I hadn't realised ou bought a XR6, is it a turbo? Mine has the diff clunk when hot as described above but it is only noticable when using some of the ample power available. |

Dana Spicer have a diff additive available through ford dealers for $18 that quietens it down somewhat, despite numerous clutch dumpings I havent been able to destroy mine.

I've had it almost a year Moff, its a non turbo manual, my clunking it noticable at any time, say 100kph on the freeway using cruise, hit the Coast button and 'clunk'.

OK, got the good oil (sorry ) from the WA head Ford tech today, the Dana additive quietens the lsd cones, as does the Mobil oil and the Redline oil I have used in my previous XR.
The clunking diff in XR's is as i've said above, plus there is small amounts of fore/aft diff movement on decel/acel, its a known problem and on Fords 'to do' list, unfortunately not highest priority. Good news for me is, they are taking the car back and I don't get to see it again until fixed, what do I drive in the meantime you ask? they are lending me a GT, just have to wait until after the Wanneroo round of the V8's as its being used as a promo car. |
