Welcome to the forum Enlashok! FYI the Mazda is a Courage C65 and not a Pescarolo.

...and there have been rotary equivalence rules for some time, it's only just now that someone has tried to use them.

Jim Downing ran rotary-engined Kudzus for a while in America in the 1990s.

Why do people think the 787B was such a great car.
It was always way off the pace and only won Le Mans because of very, very generous rule breaks (because no one considered it a threat). |

That Mazda was the first Japanese car to win LeMans. While the design itself may not have been great, the car achieved greatness. |

Johnny Herbert was pretty heroic that year, too.

the 787b acctuley had a porsche six speed box, it was a great car as the rotary engine is synounamus with long distance racing thus prooven in other events mazda entered prior to Le Mans, to say it only won because of rule break is pretty blind IMHO, because they had took advantage of the new rules for that year, Kudos to them.

Yeah but isnt that what was attempted this year by hobbling the Audis? (rules breaks to allow others to compete) Yet they still won...

The Mazda was a dog (as far as Le Mans winners go), albeit a reliable one.
While the turbo Mercs, 962s and V12 Jags were hobbled with 100kg ballast and a lower fuel allowance the Mazda was given more fuel and allowed to run much, much lighter. The 3.5 atmo cars never had a chance due to reliability issues. Kudios to ORECA/Mazdaspeed for getting the rule breaks and running a faultless race, but the car left a lot to be desired. |

The 787 didn't become great in most peoples mind until Gran Turismo 3 was released. Before that it was just the Japanese car that won LeMans.

I associate he 787B as the final chapter in 9 noisy Le Mans races from 83. Folklore. When I see some of the people that used to come with us in the 80s - "remember the noise of the Mazda?" is oft asked
BTW - in 90 the Jags weighed: 1 - 931 2 - 938 3 - 953 (winner!) 4 - 949 |

A dog. No, no way. A worthy winner and a good looking car to boot. |

Most people? You think that being in Gran Turismo was a greater claim to fame than winning Le Mans? Is that's so, then console gaming/gamers must be sadder than I previously thought....... So, lets get this thread back on track as per the original post shall we? |

Any car that wins deserves it by virtue of winning.
I doubt it would be in anyones top 10 Group C/GTP cars though, in terms of performance. Its appearance in the Gran Turismo games is were much of this appreciation for the car has come from. |

The 787 did what a Toyota , Nissan and AMG coundn't do ..... a car doesnt have to be great to win Le Mans . But it certainly is a great car when its the only japanese car ever to win Le Mans . Im sure Mazda think its a great car as well as Hughes De Chaunac !!!
I loved it !!! |

the R26B rotary engine sounds amazing, it was a 5 speed porsche box(contray to my previous post did some research), designed by Nigel Stroud and what a master peice !! |

Yes, and remember all the 'great' cars that fell by the wayside in 1991 for all sorts of reasons. Good car, bad car, whatever - the history books declare the Mazda the victor.
