VD, your'e at Hope Island, Tony C lives just down the road and a lot of the major teams are scattered fairly closely around you.
Why not pose the question to them? I think a Courier Mail journalist lives fairly close to you, a journo who knows a bit about motorsport (particularly V8 Supercars). You could ask him as well. |

The Regurgitator is close by to me, but why would I talk to someone whose future now depends on the income from V8Supercar?
I think the journos will be even less controversial than they are now, their income depends on it.. |

.. this quote is true. Can the Speedline wheel rims used by V8Supercar teams since 1993 do the job in 2006 they could do in 1993? Answer... Yes. Can the Oz wheels used in their place by many teams do the same? Answer... Yes. Can these 8 spoke (888) or 6 spoke (HRT) wheels do the same? Answer.. Yes. They are interchangeable in the sense that they can all do the same job, have passed the same types of tests to prove they are suitable (and some have been race tested over more than a decade) from that standpoint a wheel is a wheel is a wheel You can get deeper into whats going on with temperature measurements, measuring airflows coming in towards the hub, the heat dissipation whwn onboard, and after running in cooldown mode... everything that is measurable is a variable that can be considered which one is better than the others.. But like everythng.. there is no 'perfect' wheel. I look at the thin spokes of the 888 wheel and wonder when they are interlocked with another car, will the spoke be more likely to break because it is physically smaller (and therefore loses the protection of surface area) than a Speedline or Oz wheel spoke? Take a look at the 'sparco' wheels the proddie Subarus used just a few short years ago, the thin spokes used to break under load in older sets of these wheels because the spokes were too thin... and broke away from the hub after long use, or hitting kerbs with that wheel.... There is more than one way to skin an engineered cat... |

If you want to be simplistic with your engineerring, yes they are both round and dimensionly similar...
With all you vast knowledge, why then would one move from steel rims to alloys in the first place...a set of steelies could be picked up for under $500, and would provide the same roundness and increased strength to boot...you could even weld some handles on to facilitate quicker pit stops Have you had a close-up look of the new 8 spoke rims? They are a completely different fish to the boots the scubbies used...Remember, there are 3-dimensions in the physical world! |

While the 4 other designs in the A-tek range with 5 spokes or 6 spokes like HRT is looking at, which are all cheaper than 888's 8 spoker, are also cheaper.. with varying degrees of aesthetically pleasing design.. Quote:
I saw and touched them at Sandown last year when they debuted. They are shiny and smooth, and obviously comply to somebody's requirements as well as the manufacturing specs are achieved. They are light (yes I lifted one) and it does fit in your hands.. but I found the surface a little slippery (I was not wearing gloves at the time) which may have come from the newness.. Did I see almost double the value in it compared to a Speedline? Not really. |

I did that once,
but when they started trying to explain how you could throw a ball through a wall (when the atoms just happened to pass beside each other) I sort of lost the plot... and then when they also said that there "things" that when rotated 360 degrees do not look the same as they started, but did when rotated 720 degrees ??? Interesting to read in the Telegraph todat that Perkins Engineering brings 60 rims to a race meeting, plus the 8 on the 2 cars...
... while Cromly discussed on Panelbeaters that teams can hang onto 80 Dunlops per car at any one time.... |

god forbid VD being a tertiary qualifed engineer, and elaborating on his understanding of force system distribution in a "transient" sense. I feel humbled, even with my Masters Degree..........

Went and had a look at the new 888 wheel after the 2nd race at the clipsal. most interesting was the edge of the rim (where the tyre and wheel join visably) was significantly bent outwards for about 6 inches on the rear left of the 88 car. ( I assume there had been contact at some stage) Was suprised that the tyre had not gone flat or wheeel had broken.
you can actually see this on the footage of the race, or at least unsual vision around the left rear wheel |

They are doing a couple of things, firstly the flat surface protects the spokes of the wheel from damage... they also can suck our brake dust or suck in cool air (depending how the vanes are set up inside)... they can also look good...
Pick one |
