New overalls
In the last CAMS magazine, Peter Lawrence casually remarked that FIA 1986 standard apparel will be phased out in a couple of years and the FIA 2000 standard will be the minimum accepted.
I have to ask the obvious question, why? Is there any reported incident where the FIA 1986 standard was found to be lacking or are we just keeping up with the FIA for the sheer sake of it? After all, most club racers have a money tree growing in the backyard. |

You do realise that your thread has nothing to do with V8 Supercars, Cochrane bashing, skaife bashing, parity, street circuits.......... What are you doing posting this here? You've answered your own question beautifully there m8, my money tree is still a small shrub and since we can't water anything at the moment in QLD, I reckon it'll remain a shrub...... CD. |

concider yourself happy !
the german asn is always more kathlic than the pope ! we had new suits mandatory this year already ! while i agree that racers need to be safed before themselfs from time to time ( and a 8 year old suit is just a joke really ), this are first steps in making the fia a lot of money. they introduce fia standarts for everything now, boots and gloves to follow in germany next year, those ultra expensive crap carbon helmets as used in f1 are next ! this enabels the fia to soley invoice any manufacturer for the application for - and the homologation and annual renewal of a fia standart product. so far on many items, it was a set standart that was tested outside fia ( snell rating for example ) that was made mandatory by fia, but did not earn them money. that will change soon. so expect prices to raise, as manufacturers need now not only to refund all the gear they give f1 for free, but also the cost created by fia. how i wish club racing would abandon all asn/fia ships, just like the motorcycle guys have done with fim ! |

Hey, Norme 86 suits haven't been made for - what - 4 years now, most are probably 6 years old.
Given that my waistline grows even quicker than my overdraft, I'm impressed a 6 year old suit is any use for you guys anyway! |

I had a short discussion with a scrute early this year when the rumours were going around that the MSA were to stop the use of fia1986 suits. He told me then there were no plans for such at club level in the UK.
He did say that they are no longer suitable for international events though. |

Like the midgetman, I'm going to have to purchase a new suit sooner rather than later. While I always have them made to measure, I find it strange that the legs are now too short, which convinces me that the thinning on top of my head is nothing to do with losing it, just that I'm still growing, and up through my hair!
I've had a hunt around and have decide to spend my money with Stand21. They offer a much more "flamboyant" style of suit, compared to the drab stuff from nearly everyone else. And me, I do like flamboyant! Is it me or do Alpinestars suits look like they were designed by "International Rescue" and were made on Tracy Island? Hometune, will that "no plans" be like the sudden ban on Proban suits? Rob. |

"no plans" could well be like we've seen before. I don't think the MSA always let the scrutes know with any more notice than we get.

So my old pair of Nomex that say 1986 Standard (but were manufactured in 1990) are still eligible for UK Club level Motorsport then? Is that races or just Hills, Sprints etc?

For the forseeable future, Norme 86 is OK for circuit racing, speed events & rallying. 1990! Wow, that is impressive.......You ought to consider donating those to a museum. Yes, they'll do the job, but imagine what 16 years of development has done to designs, fabrics, performance etc etc. Like driving a 16 year old car - yes it does the same job as a new one, but it's rusty, the windows don't work properly.......You get what I mean? |

My biggest issue is that they use to be "Villenuve style" but they are now more... tailored. (That is the polite way of saying tight) |

Mick, it was a couple of years ago that CAMS made the 1986 standard compulsory.

Sounding like a cheapskate....I need the "correct" overalls to compete in club level motorsport, without them being stupidly expensive. Recommendations?
