Maybe out Finnish posters can add some detail. As the car must have been there for best part of 30 years now.
Alex.
If anyone built the engine it would have been either Roger Dowson or Don Moore (come on Terry!!). If Gerry had a big yank tank with the handle-bars (sic) on the wrong side it could have been any time in early '80 (which must have been when the sales happened.

The sequence of photos you can see in the 3rd and 4th a little black ball flying out of the car; Dad's helmet, still done up, so you can imagine what happened afterwards!!
Anyway, here's the advert:-

Alex, you are of course correct.

I was trying to get annoy Terry B to get him to use his grey matter as Don Moore was probably the best ever MG/BL (sorry Spike!!) specialist and out of anyone on this forum I was sure Terry would know.

Just spreading the knowledge TB; is a shame Don M doesn't get more credit for what he did in my eyes. Plus, you can correct me on the stories Dad told me and improved upon!!

Cheers Terry, Happy New Year too.

P.S. I have a load of B bits, pistonheads, cranks, etc, PM me if interested.

There was one Dolomite Sprint that made its way across the Irish Sea and was pedalled by Clondalkin newsagent Reg Tuthill until [IIRC] it met its maker during an unofficial practice session at Mondello when Reg made contact with somebody at the pit lane exit. Possibly one of Gerry's ? Anyone know ?

Could well be one, every year when he went to Mondello he sold a few Capris and Monzas in the early '80s and of course a lot of Firenzas and the odd Chevette in the late '70s were sold there too.

If it is/was a Gerry Marshall car it'll have GMR??? on the engine and I think the chassis too.

I do have all the sales records somewhere but I looked for them on New Years Eve and came across ac ouple of race capris but then got distracted by a foot high of newspaper clippings from '63 to '73 which I didn't realise had been kept, so working through the early '60s at the moment, once I get bored will dig the sales records out!!

Not sure of the origins of that car but during a (rare then) 30 min race, after Reg had left the pitlane from his mandatory pitstop, it was hit from behind, by a little Fiat 128 3p. I remember being amazed that the rear wheels of the Dolly were pushed so far forward!! I believe the car was scrapped afterwards.

Gerry's Silverstone accident

This is the huge accident that Gerry had and, to confirm Gregor's comment, the ball flying out of the car was Gerry's helmet. When the car rolled so violently the seat collapsed rearwards and the roll cage hooked under and flipped the helmet off. Hence GM's horrendous head lacerations.
When I came round on lap 2 to Club I couldn't figure out why I had a 100+ yard lead - I had seen a flurry of movement in the rear view mirror coming out of Club on lap 1 but had no idea the extent of the accident (no radios in those days) until I came up to Club, saw the ambulances and lights and the totalled Dolly.
And there, in the middle of the track, was Gerry's helmet. I froze because I thought for a moment that his head was still in it (sorry Gregor) and Walkinshaw caught up. In all the time I raced it was the only time I instinctively slowed down because of an accident - I tended to press harder in the hope of exposing some weakness in the opposition - but this really rattled me, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Luckily the crew pit boarded me that GM was okay and I went on to win the race - some justification as Gerry was convinced that Walkinshaw punted him off deliberately. That led to a lot of bad blood between the teams which remained for the duration of the season.

I was very interested to read this thread about the Dolomite Sprints. I have owned and raced one in classic racing for 15 years and collected as much information about them that I could including the copy of Motor Magazine which carried an article of the launching of the Triplex Racing Team. Over the years I have been able to gather together a number of parts including a Don Moore Cylinder head and cam etc that was used in a 16V TR7 rallycar by John Buffum in the US, prior to it being converted to a TR8. The basis of my current engine is a Holbay F3 unit. Regarding the oversteer, I think this was due to the high rear roll centre, which if you lowered the car bacame even higher. On the Group 2 cars they homologated a system wherby the propshaft was a torque tube and they could do away with the upper suspension arms thus giving a 3 link system which would have probably eliminated the oversteer problem. When British Leyland imploded, all the Special Tuning parts were gathered together at an airfeild hanger. These included a lot of the Dolomite Sprint parts. An Australian offered I think 10% of the value and received about 10 container loads of parts. Given that the initial design was for a front wheel drive car and I dont think they changed the floorpan much when they converted it to rear wheel drive, the Sprint acheived a lot more than it should have.

It must have been difficult as a team-mate to continue when you see something like that, even with the pit board signs.
As for the bad blood that still continued very much until the day Dad passed away.

I found a (faded...) fax regarding the Dolomite in Finland. It says it was a Group 1 car that won the British Championship in 1979. And Gerry sold it to a Mr Urpiala who apparently still had all of the original papers from the car.
Is it possible the cars went to Scandinavia instead of the Netherlands as Rex remembers ?
Somewhere I have a chassis number for the car, I will try to find it.
Alex.

I guess it could have been Finland not the Netherlands. Gregory Marshall would probably be able to confirm. Whichever it is, it certainly didn't win the Championship in 1979 - that was the season when the RAC allowed the RX7 to be homologated as a four-seater (!) and Walkinshaw, unfortunately, beat Gerry and me.

A pair of Broadspeed '79 Dolomites went to Denmark in 1980 - one of them said to be a Gerry Marshall car in the contemporary motor press. Arne Riis and John Nielsen (later of Toyota ETCC-fame, rather than "Super" John), picked the cars up in Britain over the winter and raced them for another three seasons before being sold on. One car was apparently badly crashed late in the '84 season, while the other appeared in historic racing only in 2006.

Sounds like there were a lot of ex-Broadspeed GMR Group 1 Dolomites!!
The advert I posted on the page before was for three Group 1 car (2 ex-Broadspeed) and three Production Saloon/Group N cars.
I have got most of Dad's sales records so I'll have a look and see what I can find and Dad definitely kept one of the Group N cars for the 1980 season.
Knowing Dad I wouldn;t be surprised if the truth might have been stretched a little though!!

Just read this thread and can confirm Walkinshaw was always at war with Gerry,Williams and Tony.Barry Williams being the junior at the time.I witnessed this in Roger Willis's Castrol caravan at Brands in 74 with Mr Walkinshaw giving his opinon directly to all three.Very direct even by my standards
