Planning return to racing in 2010
Hi
This year I have not been doing any racing due to the financial crisis and I want to consolidate my finances. Next year I am planning on making a comeback. I did 2 Formula Vee races in 2008 on arrive and drive basis which went smoothly, but I'd like to try something a little different. I want to re-apply for my licence, the one I have is 2008 licence and I know that I will need to have a new medical carried out. But will I have to re-do the ARDS test or is that for if you've been out for many years? I am thinking of doing something like Formula Jedi. Does anybody know what the costs are compared to Formula Vee? Also what is it like fitting into a Jedi car compared to the Vee? Because one of the problems I had is that I'm 6'1" and I never felt totally comfortable behind the Vee I was driving (this particular one was originally built for a lady!). Are there any other series which you could recommend to me as well that might be worth it? Thanks |

you will not need to do the ards test if you renew licence every 2 or 3 years
it is cheaper to keep yr licence going every seaosn anyway than let it lapse and have to redo part of teh test series to race in all depends on your budget to buy a car/ or rent a car for the year? Do you intend to own a car and prep it yourself and transport to events? i see you live in yorkshire so how far do you intend to travel value for money is FFord somewher a race every fortnight! Club F3 great cars ( [proper race cars!) £9-35k 3 different clases and some other Libre races you can do with a car as well not as expensive as you may think to run them I can offer Fford race hire I can offer f3 race hire or sell you 1 of my 3 cars jedis = fast cars but i wouldnt wanna be in one when it shunts! |

I am looking to do arrive and drives. I've been as far as Silverstone so any races as far south as there would be fine.
As far as budget is concerned, I did my Vee races for something around £700 a race for hiring the car, so anywhere around that or similar for an arrive and drive event would be fine. That's good about the Licence part, I'm definately going to re-apply then. |

universal racing services classic formula ford 2000 is brilliant value for cheap slicks and wings racing, all pre 83 cars mainly van diemens, parts still produced by "urs", can buy one for between £9-12k.

the only advice i can give is to only race something you can afford to crash. Most of club racing is the same price give or take a bit - but F3 cars (or anything with carbon and high performance engines) are always going to be more expensive when things go bang or when you hit something. Hence why i race in F3 rather than something carbon...
I think URS looks great, but you can 't go wrong with FF1600. Good luck. |

I think F3 might be a little out of my league considering I've not had much experience. :P

You can't run an F3 arrive and drive for £700 per race. FVee is probably your best bet, maybe just about FF1600 - Monoposto is also worth a good look for that sort of money.

Thanks john for completley ballsing up the thread
who has said F3 is 700 quid only you! FFord is 700 quid and not just about Mono being a good bet oh yeah with which car F3 based car or FFord cmon guys get real This man wants to go racing in an economcal fashion where he gets lots of seat time and is not throwing tyres at a car or high cost low milega engine rebuilds or many hours prepping time to prep the car He doesnt need fancy truck & awning in the paddock he has already doen F vee and appears to want to try something else Logical to try Fford in a decent prepared and maintained car at some club races Its natural after a year he may want to try his hand at something a bit faster more technically challenging but it will cost hm more money so he can consider f3 type car I can do him FFord for a year of testing racing at his budget level I can offer him an f3 car to rty se eif he like sit or he can have arun in my Mono spec f3 car hell if he fells horny enough and has saved his beer vouchers may even let him have a run in my F3000 car but let the guy walk before he can run and dial himself in gently and see if he can afford it and enjoy the concept of driving a race car again |

Daftwad, he said around £700 for arrive and drive. Maddog said come and race F3. I pointed out F3 costs more than that.
So does FF1600 in fact. |

I think various people within Monoposto circles were offering a drive for that sort of figure in a Formula Vauxhall Junior or similar.

Peter i like yer style
the base line answer Jeremy is you could get a run in the older 88-93 era f3 car but not the later dallara cars in Club F3 you would get 10 lapper club libre racing at that level of money though |

better still, go and find any straight car that is up for sale, (preferably this would be one has been run by a team & owned by a driver who was a midfielder, that way the car is in top condition and not had its nuts driven off).
Instead of paying all that hard earned cash for a rent-a-ride and have a team of blokes to clean & polish the car at the track simply to look busy, buy some new tyres, get one of your mates who is a mechanic to be your team mate, read the theory books (no one ever does) and go racing. Start at the back of the grid and move forward. Don't keep thrashing around on worn out rubber, you will just confuse yourself. Cost of FF1600 - car seems to be silly money, about £10,000 Cost of F3 Masters - I suppose about £12,000 Cost of F3 Class 2001 - Dallara301 they ask about £25,000 but you can get good ones for £18,000. Whatever, its a once-only captial investment and any one of these is far better value for money than a season's rent-a-ride... |

you have completley missed the mans point
he doesnt want to own a car!!!! 1 has to spend lots of dough buying it 2 probably doesnt have space to keep car or trailer ( another expense) 3 then tow vehicle tools stands jacks etc etc 4 he doesnt want top do the prepping 5 drag car to track find helpers etc etc 6 then you have to deal with A holes when you want to sell the car renting a race car is a far better way for many folk to go racing ive done it and i would look at doing it again running a race car when you have a job/ career/ business to run & a family is a pain in the ass so give the guy useful info that helps him |

can do a test day in f3 for £1-2k all depends on how much track time you use
more miles more $ for engine miles general wear n tear Can do in 97 or 01 dallara F3000 will be a lot more £40-50 per mile on engines alone! Is Ted giving you this as your 40th birthday present? |
