Taking off almost three abreast pole sitter Dave Brodie soon challenged early race leader Andy Rouse with Robb Gravett in the best seat to the action. Already by lap 1 Rouse was down to third while Brodie eaked out an advantage ever so slightly on Gravett. Midway through the race the two front runners came up to lap the dicing class D Corollas of Tony Crudgington and Phil Dowsett. Brodie went through on the start finish straight while Gravett caught up with them at the Complex. Crudgington was defending his class lead on the inside while Gravett, desparately not to loose too much time to Brodie, took the outside line leaving Dowsett nowhere to go in the middle. The Sierra was sent backwards into the tyre wall by Dowsett and both retired on the spot with a short fire from the Gravett car. Later a rescue vehicle was sent to the scene of the accident and parked on the race line the race was flagged off.
By then Dave Brodie had suffered from a puncture leaving him in a lowly 14th and thus Andy Rouse enherited the lead and eventual win. Tim Harvey, running at a conservative pace in the early going, had the tyres to challenge Rouse for the lead late in the race but his charge was cut short by the early flag fall. For a while Mike Newman had been running as best of the rest and would take third at the flag from a very competitive Karl Jones while Mike Smith had to fend off Sean Walker for the final two point placings. Laurence Bristow was up amongst the best but had a coming together with Graham Goode sending both cars spinning. Bristow then suffered a puncture eventually finishing him well down the order while Goode minus rear bumper finished 10th.
James Weaver took a relatively relaxed class B victory when Frank Sytner was delayed by a pit stop for a new front tyre, leaving him forth in class. Godfrey Hall fought with Ian Forrest over the first few laps for best of the rest with Forrest retiring and John Llewellyn catching up to Hall in the fight for second but never made it past.
John Cleland was in cruise mode for victory when he had to up the tempo to gain the fastest lap back from Louise Aitken-Walker. The pair would take another 1-2 with John Morris challenging for second in the early laps and Alan Minshaw retiring very early on.
Phil Dowsett lead away in class D but was passed by Tony Crudgington and then fighting each other for some laps. The fight was broken up when Gravett intervened leaving Crudgington to win, Dowsett to the tyre wall and Geoff Kimber-Smith to second.

It's reported that Louise Aitken-Walker will have a proper circuit car by the Grand Prix support race.

Dave Brodie has received additional support from Springfield but still looks rather bare in the sponsor department.

Please note that the Karl Jones RS500 at some early season stage is entered as Lee Asquith Motorsport. Vic Lee, his co-driver from Donington, entering the BTCC?

Well these turkeys, they're gonna have to start getting up early in the morning if they wanna take me and my team on. They turn up with their big transporters and their good-looking motorhomes, and they prance around the paddock all day long in their overalls, but when it comes to getting the business done they're a bunch of wallies. Apart from Andy.
Not shown on the review video was Brodie giving Tim Harvey the trophy for the Thruxton win - complete with the original, still-sealed bottle of champagne! - in the paddock before the Snetterton round.

It's not hard to like Dave Brodie!

Australian Auto Action quoted early in 1989 that DJR were planning another attack on the TT later in the year. The same magazine also mentions in another issue (perhaps when reporting Gravett's round 1 win?) that Johnson & Bowe were possible starters in the Donington 1hr race in the second Trakstar Sierra (with Gravett/Smith teaming up in the other)

A shame neither came off...

On another matter, why the switch to rolling starts for 1989?

John Morris took over the Minshaw Golf for the final round at Silverstone- his own had been badly shunted at the previous round. I think I've read somewhere that he used his own engine in Minshaw's car- the Demon Tweeks machine having been sidelined with a blown engine as you suggest?

It's reported that Louise Aitken-Walker will have a proper circuit car by the Grand Prix support race.

From memory, Cleland had a new car mid-season, his original then being taken over by Louise. The ex-rally car she started the year with became the third car for Jeremy Rossiter

Please note that the Karl Jones RS500 at some early season stage is entered as Lee Asquith Motorsport. Vic Lee, his co-driver from Donington, entering the BTCC?
I think Lee became a partner in the Asquith team for a while, before going off to set up his own operation for 1990

For the crowd. Rolling starts should provide more entertainment was the official line, while a lot of team and car owners were praising rolling starts for being friendlier to transmission (and check books) and giving the cars more of chance to spread out before any potential panel beating first corners.

I think the economy bit makes sence, but personally I have always thought standing starts to create the more exitement.

Exciting news about the possible Johnson/Bowe appearence for a BTCC race.

With 30 cars on the grid traffic became a matter that slightly delayed both Rouse and Harvey while under pressure from Gravett who would take the lead midway through. Robb Gravett would just keep out of touch for the remaining laps while Tim Harvey managed to keep Andy Rouse at bay in the fight over second. Laurence Bristow was looking healthy in fourth back a stuck throttle made him spin down to sixth behind Mike Smith and Sean Walker in the sole surviving Graham Goode car, Goode and Mike Newman retiring in latter third of the race with turbo problems after good early runs. Chris Hodgetts lacked horsepower in seventh but won the battle with Dave Brodie, while behind Jerry Mahony strugled with new Pirelli tyres having switched from Dunlops. Mark Rennison scored his first BTCC result in 10th.
Frank Sytner was leading class B when his engine broke after but 2 laps, leaving an easy victory to James Weaver. Ian Forrest would take his privateer colleagues one by one for second ahead of John Llewellyn and the two Maguire cars of Godfrey Hall and John Clark.
In class C John Cleland broke a hub forcing him out of another victory, leaving it to Louise Aitken-Walker to take the spoils, while the Golfs of John Morris and Alan Minshaw battled throughout the race for eventual second.
Phil Dowsett utterly dominated class D winning from Mark Goddard (substituting for Geoff Kimber-Smith for unknown reasons) and Tony Crudgington.

Robb Gravett did the first qualifying session in Mike Smith's car as his own car wasn't quite ready after the Thruxton shunt earlier in the week.

Guy Edwards' car was also ready after it's Thruxton shunt, but then Edwards crashed the Andy Rouse car during practice for Silverstone. This forced Rouse to race the Edwards car.

Only when Les Liddiard withdrew from unspecified reasons was the Sierra of Robin Donovan allowed to take the start.

On June 10th Nigel Mansell and Jerry Mahony is scheduled to perform at the Lancashire Police Open Day in Preston. Mahony will bring along his RS500.

Andy Rouse has been announced as co-driver to Peter Brock at the Bathurst 1000 race.

Dave Brodie's has been disqualified from his victory at Thruxton round 3 because of illegal fuel.

JQF Engineering expects to have their new self build RS500 ready for the Silverstone GP support race for Gerrit van Kouwen.

Andy Rouse revenged his defeat from the previous round with a resounding victory. Tim Harvey challenged him early on but was soon demoted to third by Robb Gravett. The Trakstar team had Kiwi engine guru Neal Lowe of the Dick Johnson team in hand, but had issues over what could and what could not be modified regarding air intakes and filters. This left Gravett and Mike Smith down on power compared to the Rouse cars, but a first corner spin cost Smith all chances of a decent finish. His fight back through the field was one of the highligts of the race though. Harvey was soon in tyre troubles and further demoted to forth by Guy Edwards but held station ahead of Laurence Bristow. Graham Goode took the final point for sixth loosing teammate Mike Newman after an early off course excursion.
James Weaver and Frank Sytner had little drama in winning a one-two class B battle after early challenger Barrie ”Whizzo” Williams spun out of contention in the Demon Tweeks M3. Godfrey Hall would be left on the start line when his transmission failed while John Clark was another first lap casualty spinning and collected by class runner John Morris.
This left fellow Golf runner Alan Minshaw in forth in class C behind the now three Vauxhall Astras. John Cleland picked up another win from Louise Aitken-Walker and new driver Jeremy Rositer.
Ray Armes finally debuted the Graham Goode prepared Honda Civic Si to take a convincing class D victory from usual winner Phil Dowsett.

Unfortunately Autosport only brings partial results from the race – a trend to be continued throughout the season. So any help with filling out the missing results will as usual be much appreciated.

The YouTube clip does give a nice view of both the Trident Maserati wearing #26 and the Tony Dolley Corolla AE82 carrying #81. The Dolly-Colly is basically white with red and yellow bumpers while the Les Liddard car looks similar but with all red bumpers, but what number?

Debut of the Ray Armes Honda run as PG Tags Racing. The car was build by Graham Goode and Goode was soon to be seen as team in the Autosport result tables, but I thought the car was actually run by Trakstar ..or was that only from 1990?

Round 8 of 13 of the 1989 Esso RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Sunday July 23rd 1989 over 17 laps on the 4.182 kms Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

The race clashed with the Spa 24 hour race as usual and for the second week running the BTCC was support to a FIA World Championship race – this time the Group C cars.

Race shortened from 20 to 17 laps after a massive collision betwin class B runners Godfrey Hall and Ian Forrest. Hall spun off at Paddock Hill Bend, likely on oil, and send bouncing back on the track to be collected by a hapless Forrest. Both cars were damaged beyond immediate repair and Hall likely missed the next few rounds as a result.

With Lowe still present in the Trakstar camp and engine legalities sorted Robb Gravett dominated the event winning his third victory of the season. Team mate Mike Smith was also on a high and finished a season best of third only beaten by a tyre conservative Andy Rouse. Tim Harvey was initially in the fight for third but a collision with Smith in the original start left him with a damaged radiator and eventual blown head gasket. This left fourth for Guy Edwards ahead of Mike Newman. Laurence Bristow, starting from pitlane, drove with command and finished an excellent if a little unrevarding sixth.
James Weaver and Frank Sytner once again delivered the goods for BMW in class B although Sytner was almost stopped by fuel supply issues late in the race.
In class C John Cleland was running a bit conservative, informed that Louise-Aitken Walker had the bonus point for fastest lap, and then upped the ante a tad for another victory.
With Phil Dowsett off to Spa class D was down to just three starters and no points for an eventual fuel starved but winning Ray Armes. Geoff Kimber-Smith was only other finisher when Tony Crudgington retired curtesy of a puncture.

Ian Forrest is repeatedly entered as a Prodrive driver in the Autosport results, his car being a former Prodrive car, but always thought it was his own team running the car.

Robb Gravett winning his fourth victory of the season but this time it was real close. The Trakstar car running on an unfamiliar Yokohama compound didn't know exactly what to expect from the tyres he raced them only as hard as he had to and had Andy Rouse all over him. Things eased off slightly towards the end as Tim Harvey momentarily went past Rouse on lap 18. In the end status quo remained covering the three some by just a second.
Will Hoy, substituting a recently ankle operated Mike Smith, in the second Trakstar car was a slendid fourth in unfamiliar enviroments from a tyre troubled Laurence Bristow. Sean Walker took the final point in sixth after an early off course excursion. Karl Jones looked set for that point only to blow an engine on lap 17. Gerrit van Kouwen finished seventh in his first try with the now active suspensioned JQF RS500 but with failing boost.
Another Weaver-Sytner show case in Class B with Ian Forrest taking third. John Clark seemed destined for third but a slow puncture caused a spin into retirement. As first privateer John Llewellyn sported a six speed gearbox but that caused him problems in the race leaving him fourth.
In Class C the order was once again John Cleland, Louise Aitken-Walker and Jeremy Rositer in the three Dave Cook Vauxhalls and again Alan Minshaw making sure that any points were distributed.
Ray Armes took another pointless Class D victory, even bothering with rebuilding the car from a Friday practice accident.

Jesper
Yes, the gaps in the Autosport results are frustrating.... I've got more complete versions of some, which were from a combination of Autosport and Motoring News reports, so I'll fill in what I can. My version ofthis one disagrees slightly with yours, mainly on the Class B M3s, but I'm not 100% certain mine is correct either...

Re the Rossiter Astra- As I said a few posts back, I think this was the ex-rallycar used by Louise A-W in the early races. Louise's 'new' car was possibly Cleland's early-season mount, with JC getting a new car mid-season.

The rallycar was always easy to tell from the other two team cars because it was LHD and had a different paintjob- the same colours, but different lettering and logos- no prominent 'Vauxhall' logos on the sides, a large Mobil 1 decal in their place etc. The car carried additional decals for Rossiter's sponsor, 'Spax Shock Absorbers'.

I'd always thought the 1989 Honda was run by Goode, as suggested in Autosport- the 4-door car in 1990 was definitely Trakstar though- I've got a pic of it in the paddock at Brands sharing the Trakstar awning with Gravett's RS500

I think the Liddiard Corolla ran as #85

Jesper
I was at this one, but unfortunately don't have a more complete version of the results either....
The reference to Prodrive entering Forrest's car is interesting- I think Forrest might have been getting some help and technical support from Prodrive, but I don't know if it was enough to make it an official Prodrive entry....?

It was- absolutely perfect weather. The only downside was that I had great racing to watch, perfect weather- and something went wrong with my camera, so most of the photos I took that weekend are unuseable....

The 1989 PG Tags Honda Civic was built and run for Ray Armes by Graham Goode Racing (who were also responsible for his Golf GTI prodsaloon the previous year, and Renault 5 Turbo Cup car the year before that).
Trackstar re-built this into a two litre four door car for the 1990 season.

Thank you for clarifying the matter, VIVA GT. I have wondered what the homologation issues were, because in Japan Honda Civic teams obviously raced as hard as ever during the first part of 1989!

Good question. I had always thoughts that the deal had just come together later than hoped with the eye mainly on 1990.....

However he ended up with less than half a season's racing out of it because the change to 2 litres for the smaller class for the following year made the whole project highly expensive and unfortunate. Ray was left with a car unsuitable for the 2-litre regs.

Had the Group A classes continued, that car would have cleaned up in the baby class for a few years I reckon and many many more people would've entered them!

Andy Rouse and Robb Gravett at it again but the Trakstar man had to retire with a broken gear lever after only four laps. Dave Brodie was among the two in the opening moments of the race but was soon overtaken by Laurence Bristow but midrace the situation was reverced once again, Brodie taking Mike Smith through with him. Guy Edwards was next in line to pass Bristow and soon had an eye on Mike Smith in third. Smith and Edwards then tripped over the lapped Corolla of Geoff Kimber-Smith with both Sierras retiring on the spot. For Brodie the race was soon over too as he pitted with ruined tyres. This left the Labatt's cars of Laurence Bristow and Tomas Mezera, Tim Harvey at the Nürburgring racing a factory Spice, in second and third. Graham Goode cars took the remaining points positions with Sean Walker heading Mike Newman and Graham Goode.
In the classes there were little surprises. James Weaver taking his obligatory victory and fastest lap in class B as did John Cleland in class C. Ray Armes lead class D once again but retired with a broken tie rod leaving victory to Phil Dowsett.

This 10th Ford victory is reported to have secured the blue oval of the manufactures championship. Does anyone know of any further details?

Andy Rouse has been disqualified from the Silverstone R7 and Brands Hatch R8 for turbo housing irregularities, but plans to appeal. The engine was sealed at the GP support race and run at the following weeks Brands Hatch meeting. From my interpretation he stands to loose points for a victory and a second and 2x2 maximum score penalties, described in the article as loosing 56 points from his current 55 tally. Given that the official BTCC site seems to recognise these disqualifications by 2010 but that Rouse ran #1 on his car in 1990, I'm a little confused. The Autosport review does say the Class A results are undecided as of late December 1989. Help requested.

Phil Dowsett rumoured to be driving a Toyota Supra Turbo in 1990. But why?

I assume it would be partly because the 1600cc Corolla was going to be obsolete at the end of the year. Why go down a path proven to be a dead-end instead of developing a 2L Toyota for the new regulations, I don't know. Money, probably.

As an aside, the Dowsett, Dolley, and Lilliard Corollas were all sold to Australia at the end of the year. In fact, Bob Holden's existing AE86 Liftback Corollas were painted to match the Dolley and Lilliard cars!

On this incident, Brodie had just passed the Corolla on the inside approaching Westfield and Smith was about to follow him through. However, as he turned in to the corner the Cartel Sierra snapped sideways, a left-rear suspension failure pitching him off into the gravel. Kimber-Smith, faced with the red-and-white car spinning across his bows, could do nothing but crash into tail of the Sierra, but was able to continue with damage to his front left. Bristow eased off to avoid becoming involved but caught a closely-following Edwards unawares, the Kaliber driver electing to spin off in avoidance.

Edwards had just survived a near miss on the Brabham Straight at the start of the lap. Ray Armes had parked the Honda Civic on the edge of the track on the inside of the straight, rather than pulling onto the verge closer to the pit wall. Pulling out to pass the Labatt's Sierra, Edwards was suddenly faced with the rapidly-approaching rear of the parked Civic. Edwards only just avoided what would have been a very big accident.

I'm as confused as you! I was under the impression that the matter was resolved in Rouse's favour, and am surprised that an official BTCC page would show the disqualifications/points penalty if this was the case. I'll have a look through my early 1990 Auto Actions to see if it mentions anything. The RAC was pretty busy that winter, with both the Rouse matter and the protracted resolution to the 1989 British F3 Championship to keep them occupied!

There's some more explanation in the following number of Autosport. The car was to be run by Rayscar set up by Ray Selley, Les Lilliard and Tony Matthews. For that purpose the team had bought one of the '88 MIL Toyota Supra Turbos and planned to upgrade it with the latest parts from Japan. The team said to be negotiating with a Japanese financial institution for sporsorship.

Interesting info that the entire bunch of British AE82s were to end in Australia later in the year. It has already been suggested that the Dowsett's car made it via Macau, but will look out for Lilliard and Dolley being in Macau too.

Robb Gravett lead away from pole but it was Tim Harvey who made a run on him in the early laps on the expence of second qualifier Andy Rouse. A leaking rear brake caliper was soon to disturb Gravett though and would drop as low as seventh at one point. This promoted Tim Harvey and Andy Rouse to the lead battle allowing Laurence Bristow to join in on the fun as well. On lap 9 Harvey slightly overcooked his entry to the Hairpin allowing Rouse to squeeze under. Harvey tried to shot the door but was nudged sideways out of the Hairpin to see Rouse leave him for dead. Victory for Rouse while Harvey and Bristow brought second and third to the Labatt's team in close company. Chris Hodgetts on new Dick Johnson spec Dunlop rear tyres had his most competitive race of the season on home soil snatching forth from Robb Gravett on the penultilate lap. Gerrit van Kouwen complained of a down on power engine but still took sixth with delayed Guy Edwards and Sean Walker in close proximity. Edwards had had an early collision with Mike Smith ending the Trakstar driver out of the race, while Walker was hit from behind by Robb Gravett seing the Goode Sierra trailing the rear bumper. This caused a black flag and subsequent pitstop to have the offending part removed.
The tight confines and a somewhat unruly bunch of class A Sierra momentarily split the Prodrive twins at the beginning, but soon it was business as usual with James Weaver taking the victory from Frank Sytner.
John Cleland did the business for Vauxhall in class C heading home Louise Aitken-Walker and Jeremy Rossiter. John Morris would take fourth in the Lister's Golf while local man Mike Jordan would miss the race with gearbox problems.
Ray Armes and Phil Dowsett were all over each other in class D and eventually ended the race crashing each other. This left Geoff Kimber-Smith with a lucky victory.

Graham Goode only allowed to start when Mike Jordan withdrew.

Only one Terry Drury Sierra present. Mike O'Brien driving the usual Robin Donovan chassis with the David Pinkney engine! Pinkney himself was present entertaining a party of 150 (presumably people from Warranty Holdings) but had an argument with Terry Drury about the repair bill of his car from the previous week's Brands Hatch meeting. The Donovan car described as being completed very late, never ran properly in qualifying, and Donovan failed to qualify.

William Dale Jr should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Well, I've had a look through the Auto Actions and this is what the search turned up:

Quote:
Auto Action, Issue No. 491, January 26, 1990 (p.7)
BRIEFLY
ANDY Rouse has been declared Class A Champion for the Esso British Touring Car Championship. It was alleged that the material Rouse added to the turbocharger was illegal because it had been added as a modification. The RAC MSA tribunal determined that the material was added as a repair and not a modification.
In an earlier issue, Rouse said that the turbocharger housing had cracked and had been welded up to repair it, and that this is where the added material had come from. He also said that if this repair was declared illegal then every other car out there was also illegal, as they would all have endured similar repairs over time.

The earlier issue also quotes the "56 points from his current 55 tally." I'm wondering how that works? Tell me if this is right: 9 for the victory; plus 6 for the second; a maximum score is 10 (9 for win, +1 for fastest lap), so 2x2 means plus 40 points; plus his 1 point for fastest lap in Rd.7? Equals 56 for me!

It looks like the BTCC site is a little confused, too! The points table carries Rouse's 56-point penalty, but the History, 1958-1990 page says that, "...Rouse, with his six wins, retained the class title..." I looked in the issues beyond No. 491 and saw no mention of any further appeals so, unless anything appears in Autosport to the contrary, I think we can safely assume that Rouse was indeed the 1989 Class A champion.

Looking at the review video - I believe the same footage is on YouTube - Goode is nowhere to be seen at the start of the race, so I assume he either started at the back of the field, or that he started from pit lane. There is, however, a Listerine car starting inside the top 10, and it is also seen behind Mike Smith when Mike is interviewed in the pits after his retirement.

So, Mike Newman, started 8th, retired early?

That's the result I get too.

This then is were things will get a little complicated, because if the Andy Rouse results from round 7 and 8 stands as they were, a win and a second, then everybody behind him in these two races will loose a point or two screwing with the exact number of several top class A drivers on the BTCC site.

Thank you for looking up the details, William, as I for the last 20 years thought that Rouse winning class A of 1989. Now it seems that he did do it after all.

No mention of Mike Newman in the results or the race report, but the qualifying reports Mentions Guy Edwards in seventh with Mahony and Newman next up. In the results table Mahony is 9th with Mike Smith in 10th and no 8th mentioned, but looking at the YouTube clip the line-up should read Newman in 8th, Mahony in 9th and Smith in 10th. I missed this when I tabulated my version of the Autosport results. Here's another link for Birmingham coverage:
http://www.motorsportmad.com/view/62...reet-race-1989
The site contains several other 1980s BTCC races, but haven't gotten around to find out what, when and where just yet.

That's right. Goode started as first reserve due to problems in practice and was able to start the race when Mike Jordan pulled into the pits with transmission problems at the end of the warm up lap.
Mike Newman did start the race but retired (if I remember correctly) with overheating problems...
