no no no not the imminent explosion of the engine, i certainly wasn't implying that. it's just if the turbo is chronically prone to a smoky disastrous demise i'm not entirely sure of the wisdom of bringing it closer in any way to the limit of its tolerances. a turbo failing isn't the end of the world. the bit that is is the particular way in which the bmw engine chooses to lunch itself!

that said, i WILL be chipping my next car. considering the replacement parts for that are wayyyyy cheaper than the bmw has been and it's a lot less labour intensive to do anything to that particular engine than any form of maintenance on the bmw 2 litre one my team of willing spanners are far more comfortable with fixing it.

those wheels look excellent by the way!

Never spotted this thread before, nice to see what a range of cars are owned by 10 Tenth members!

My contribution to the thread, my Subaru Impreza STi Type UK PPP (try saying that after a few beers! ):

Cosmetically standard bar the mudflaps and window tints, engine is virtually standard (a little over 300 horses), suspension, ARB's and brakes have all been lightly tweaked.

Wanted an Impreza for almost 10 years, finally got one last June and absolutely love it!

Great to see such a diverse mixture of cars owned & driven by forum members.

As a fan of 80's BMW's I have owned a few early M535i's but now the kids have flown the nest I have an e21 323i. Although the standard 323 is a nice enough car I have fitted an Alpina spec 2.7 engine and later injection, uprated the suspension and inside there's leather Recaros & decent ICE. The bodyshell was totally restored just before I bought the car 2 years ago so there's no rust either. Better than that, there's no depreciation either!
My wife used to drive an 02 VW Passat but she's sold that before it became worthless and bought herself a 2002tii instead. It might hail from 1974 but it still gets used everyday and the only concession to modern motoring has been a 5 speed gearbox.

I have been a meber here for a while now but have only just found this thread. Now I have I guess I should add my car to the lists of other toys here in this thread. I love it to bits, a Lexus SC400 Limited. AKA a 'UZZ31' 4.0L V8 Toyota Soarer Limited.. I have had it for a couple of years now, and before that it took me 18months to find it. I was 'a fussy buyer'.

Its pretty clean and tidy considering its a 1992, but with only 95000kms on it now from new (backed by the history). its had a quiet life of weekend only use. The previous owner to me imported the car to Australia from Japan as they were never available in this spec outside Japan. Most of it's life was spent in a lockup in rural Japan where it was registered for weekend use only, hence the low mileage.

Although it has all the bells and whistles, It is basically pretty well standard 'Limited' spec, but that gives: full Leather, heated electric memory seats Premium (Nagamichi) sound system and DVD Multi Vision Computer thingy, 2 way sunroof, Traction Control (with an ON/Off switch) and height adjustable suspension. Switch off and the mirrors fold in, the steering wheel and seat automatically raise when you switch off for easier exit, and lower back to your memorised preference when you switch on. It has more electronic and computer stuff than I can mention, some of which I would never use but you get that. It has not one rattle or squeak, the build quality is unreal, and it is the most comfortable and pleasurable car to drive that I have ever owned.

Driving it is a pleasure.... it handles superbly for a heavy car, has brilliant brakes, and of course it certainly not lacking in performance.

Oh and as you can see its metallic British Racing Green.

The thing I like best is the all aluminium 4.0 litre Quad O/H Cam, 32 valve V8 that makes it hum along quite nicely. It will drive at city pace very happily but put your pedal to the metal and, as the bishop said to the actress, "It pulls like a Schoolboy".
Surprisingly perhaps it seems almost reasonable on petrol. (An easy 22mpg round town and 28+ on a high speed freeway run. It has a 250kph limiter on it. (Apparently)

Here are a few pics.....

Love the engine...

The colour will go nice with these.....I have a set of GeWalt Evolution 3 piece rims (18x8Fr and 18x9 rears) to go on (pic below) though it wont be until new rubber is required on the existing wheels that I can justify that.

It is quite big so no city car, but I tend not to drive in there during the day, as the station near me has a free all day car park, plus it costs me $3 on the train and takes 10 minutes into the city centre..... $3 wont even get me a parking meter for half an hour, if you can find one.

I dont do a huge mileage these days, maybe 8,000 klms per year at a stretch. It has never let me down (other than a flat battery once) Its old and maybe even outdated, but then I guess it get to us all in the end. No matter. I love it though (you may have gathered that by now!) and I have no plans to change it....

Unless I can find a similar condition UZZ32 Toyota Soarer Limited, which was same level of trim and engine etc but with an excellent Active Suspension and 4 wheel steering package as standard. Only 800 of them worldwide though.

I have a theory about the early Lexuses that Toyota was committed to making it work & could not afford to fail, so threw extraordinary resources at the cars both in design and build, so the quality & longevity of these cars should be exceptional. Of course lack of maintenance can overcome a lot... In my 500 (1500?) car fantasy garage there would be room for one of the first Lexus LS400's.

a '99 Vauxhall Astravan 1.7TD Envoy

Not glamorous but she's served me well the last 4 years. Keeping her for another couple of months before part exchanging for something with more seats.

The cambelt stopped on my Astravan! Happened while on a duel carriage way, it trashed the pistons & all the valve gear. Sadly it was going to cost way way more than she was worth before the problem to fix. So it's been scrapped for recycling!

But that means...
New car!! (& a severely dented bank balance / credit record).
'54 Reg Ford Fiesta Zetec (1.4 Petrol, manual gearbox, 19K on the clock)...

major annoyance is... I had to use the money I'd saved for a new bike as a deposit on the car .
But I'm loving my new Fiesta! I'm gonna use Fuelly to track its MPG.

Earlier in this thread I told the world I was lucky enough to own a VW Golf R32 MkV

Well.. I was.. she is gone now.. to owners new.. after the following warranty work was done:

* Repair of knock in steering at 8,000km involving on separate visits:
- Replacement of both front coil springs
- Replacement of power steering pump
- Replacement of power steering loom
- Replacement of power steering controller
- Replacement of steering rack
- 2 further visits to VW because the car creaked and groaned like a 500k km junker

* Replace 4 tyres @ 14,000km as the tread had lifted off the carcass (likely as a result of that great work on the steering)

* Replace air conditioning compressor at 24,000km

* Replace VW Mechatronics DSG Controller at 28,000km

All under warranty, car off the road for 16 days fixing this stuff (aside from separate regular service days), and ~$20k worth of repairs/replacements under warranty.

Warranty nearly gone, it was time to go... although the sound of the downshift on the DSG will be very much missed...

2011 Honda Accord Euro.. Japanese reliability.. I hope

If only everything in life was reliable as a Volkswagen...

Ladies and gentlemen, pay heed to this cautionary tale. If you want a reliable car, don't buy anything from VAG.

Be grateful you didn't swap it for a Passat R36. VW Australia fit illegal tyres as standard!

I test drove an R36 looking for a replacement for the R32. The DSG gearbox pigrooted bigtime (as in jerked and shuddered like a manual gearbox driven a gear too high by an unsympathetic driver) on a car with less than 1,000km on it.

My Honda has just under 1,000km on it now and is smooth, quiet.. and very economical.

Jeez.. I am getting old

Yeah but just think no dramas!! Those things rev there nuts off so at least the sound of a high revving engine will be some consolation
