Pikes Peak 2012
I know it's fairly early, but has anybody heard any news on new teams/cars racing up Pikes Peak next year? I know both Rys Millen with his Red Bull proto monster, and the Dacia Duster(w/Nissan GT-R engine) will be there again, and I read that Petter Solberg will be there as well. Now that the course will be 100% paved, I'm thinking we should be getting some pretty interesting new entrants next year. I'm also fairly certain that the potential to break 9 minutes is there.
Thoughts? |

With it being paved all the way then it does open it up to a wider cross section of vehicles but I can't help thinking it loses some of its appeal - and the machinery used will probably be less interesting (I love the look of Monster Tajimas Suzukis, the wild Group B conversions and more recently the rallycross specials).

I have held out hope that paving could add some sportsracers or even 'historic' prototypes making runs up the peak. How open are the rules so that ex road racing chassis could be used?

I preferred the old long drifts. They were much more spectacular.
I wonder if Global Rallycross entrants will race at the climb. |

If this video is anything to go by, perhaps we will see FXMD NSX take their new and improved NSX to Pikes, they were about as fast as a Daytona Prototype and could give Rhys or Monster a run for their money
Peak http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9--JUt5GR4 Hopefully, if they do attend other time attack teams such as GST, or Sierra Sierra would make it up there as well |

That NSX looks pretty sick; it's more entrants like this that I'd like to see in the unlimited class. Having only like 4 competitors for the top spot this past year is pretty low. I'm not familiar with the rules, but hopefully we get a whole wide assortment of vehicles competiting for top time next year, from Time Attack cars, to WRC cars, single-seaters, tricked-out Vipers, etc. |

Also don't forget Chip Yates in his 240 hp electric motorcycle... he was running top ten times until the dirt sections slowed him up a bit, but with the surface now fully paved he wil be giving the top petrol bikes as well as the top overall competitors a run for their money come next year

The final edit from GoPro of Monster Tajima's run up Pikes Peak this year. Apparently he lost power steering near the end.

It does screen like the organizers have set themselves up for a whole new crowd of entrants and fans. How difficult is it for a private team to run an old indy or champcar chassis if an owner was to come forward? Seems like between the old open wheel and sportscar chassis out there this could be a great chance to expand the unlimited class. Would openwheelers have to be modded to have lights though in case of fog? Haven't watched a pike's event in years since I happened to catch a replay on speed.

Hi,
Wowsers, that drive is simply awesome. Thanks for sharing. I will be in Denver next February so will Pikes Peak be under snow? The video reminded me when last October, my friend Johanna from Albuquerque, NM drove me in her 2004 Chevrolet Suburban from Durango to Silverton, CO and she is really fast. In fact I kid her that she used to be a Nascar driver. I was hanging on for dear life with the sheer drops and only single armco preventing us from an untimely death. Next year I am going by train to Silverton, it's safer. http://www.durangotrain.com/ and: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durango...Gauge_Railroad We also visited the Unser Racing Museum in ABQ and saw their 'Pikes Peak' cars. Amazing visit and see my fotos that I took while there. http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125399 Quote:

Pikes Peak will be under snow in February. At the peak they get around 500-600 inches of snow a year. |

Also don't forget about Paul Dallenbach on paper he has one of the fastest cars as long as the engine holds up... he was on pace during practice sessions last year

Hi Guys,
Well I will now be going to the USA at the end of April for 9 weeks and Johanna and I are going to ride the Durango to Silverton railroad this time. She's been on it many times as she is relatively local. I don't want to take that road again, totally scary .. So if we have time, will try and drive up the Pikes Peak course. Quote:

Another strong time attack build that plans to take top honors at Pike's Peak
When this is built it surely will surely be one of the top contenders... it will retain the AWD, produce in excess of 850 hp and will weigh less than 1000 kg and have downforce approaching F1 levels http://speedhunters.com/archive/2012...ject-nemo.aspx http://mrtimeattack.wordpress.com/tag/nemo-racing/ |

Just curious, I don't know the Pikes Peaks course well but now that it's been fully paved, why isn't anyone taking it on in a big single seater is is it still more suited to these tricked out closed cars?

I've thought the same myself, starting with an ex-Indy or Champ car would seem to give you a great base to add aero to bring up the high altitude downforce. Looked like that had been Dallenbach's inspiration for his older cars. But at the rate they are announcing new and varying chassis it just seems like a matter of time before someone tries, unless AWD systems are too important in case of lowfog and a damp/wet surface.

A non AWD car would struggle to put big power down after all those hairpins, by the time you gain traction you'd be at the next.
I wouldn't mind betting a standard rallycross car would be quicker than most 2wd single seaters or sports protoypes, it's not like those European hillclimb stages with quick corners and long straights. |

The UK Hillclimbs are twisty and it's mainly acceleration so traction is key. Lots of those guys use traction control too. I don't know but someone might be missing a trick?
