Bathurst Win or V8 Championship?
We know that Jamie Whincup will finish his career as Australia's best driver of all time. But Peter Brock has won more Bathurst races. Most drivers would take the title then a Bathurst win any day of the week.

1. How much the status of the championship has grown over the last 30 years and 2. how much the Great Race has been devalued (relatively) over the last 20 years. |

Adding a Poll...
A poll of the blokes & blokettes who buy the products who make the wheels go round & round might be fun to play out...

Agree completely with David's assessment.I chose Bathurst and it's not even close but that must be a function of age. This year is the 50th Bathurst 500/1000 I will have attended so it has more personal meaning for me than the Championship.

I'd say 99% of racing drivers would win a Championship over a single race.

although i guess relatively that might be devalued I can name both winners now, where as in the past it was always about Bathurst, reckon that has been what v8 supercars set out to achieve. Both get awards at the end of year ceremony |

When Tony Cochrane came on the scene in 1997 he said in time he wanted the Championship to be the holy grail, not one race.
As far as the great unwashed, the casual public are concerned, ask them who won the V8 title last year and they will say Craig Lowndes...and a few might add Steve Richards |

The great unwashed are well aware who won the championship and bathurst last year. The general public, would have no minimal if any idea of either |

Actually i haven't made that up, in my job i have heard the Bathurst winner referred to as the V8 Champ plenty of times by various customers of mine over the years

The saddest thing of all though as far as Australian motor racing is concerned though is that Peter Brock is still our most popular racing driver... |

Most of my friends are not motor racing fans and would say Bathurst without a doubt. I'd previously valued both approximately equally, but these days without following the championship to Pay TV, I'm back to putting Bathurst on a pedestal

Given Paul Morris can win Bathurst, I don't place much on the quality of a pairing and their ability to fluke a victory as much as a driver's ability to be consistently quick over the course of a season.

Don't forget won it after binning it at Griffin's, if regular/correct Red Flag procedures had been followed there was no way that win would have happened.

Commercially, the brand that is on the #1 this season has rallied up a shedload of support from its retailer group franchisees on the back of the Championship win last season, and having the #1 on the door all year.
There seems to be much more of an energy/interest in the building that houses their corporate office than in prior years.... |

Another way to look at it is that to win a championship you just need to score the most points. To win Bathurst you have to be first across the line, and you only get one chance at that every year. |

How many of the poll of 18 people, most of who reckon group A is way more awesome than v8 supercars, are actual Bathurst 1000 drivers?
