Brilliant.
Might be worth taking a metal detector around when walking the circuits. One might find enough odd parts to build most of a car or two! |

Just talk to any trackside Marshal, they'll tell you about all the things they collect when checking the track, in my experience the most common are Mobile Phones & Socket Wrenches that slide of the bodywork @ the first corner & Caterham mudguards everywhere else.. |

I’m feeling a bit smug as one winter project is already ticked off the list. My 30 odd year old Karcher pressure hot / steam washer had lost its ability to produce anything but cold water. Having discovered that a new equivalent would be several thousand £s, I phoned the original suppliers (in S Norfolk) to ask about getting it repaired. No reply to the message left, so I decided to tackle the job myself. Finding the original manual and parts book that I’d filed away helped! After a few hours just getting a handle on how it actually worked, and removing covers hiding important bits, I cleaned through all the fuel (diesel) system and the ignition. Bingo! Hot water on demand again, which will be useful next time I have to clean 24 wire wheels...... |

When I was taking care of marshaling, to test our people during free practice I confess sending some parts on the herbs through the window…*My favorite was crank bearings (cold ones of course) to teach them the importance of wearing safety gloves! As an Alfa driver I had a lot in stock… Happy days!

Yes I lose so many tools when my mechanics leave them on kart floor trays One driver went in a track walk at lunchtime last meeting, came back with my missing Allen key which my mechanic *swore* he'd put away in my toolbox Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk |

Tracks like Spa is the best places to collect car spares, I walked round it twice to find the piston and seal out of my clutch slave cylinder and although I didn't find it the stuff laying about was amazing.
I found half a conrod still fitted to the centre part of a piston along with parts of an engine block, loads of bits of bodywork and lumps of P38 I also found a complete Lucas starter motor that was the same as the one on my car These were all found on the sides of the track and in the kitty litter. |

I lost a starter motor at Spa too. Looking for it, was lucky enough to find another one when searching for. Still wonder why it was hot and someone already wrote my name on it. How do they know…

My best find when doing a pre-race circuit walk was a transponder - which my mate beat me to.....and at Croft last year a Snap-On 10mm spanner
Best ever find at a circuit was many years ago when queuing to get in a GP at Silverstone when I found a entry pass.....I did briefly think about holding it up and asking - "Anyone lost this"? before concluding that eliminating the 400 applicants might be tricky..... |

Anyone could help me pointing in the right direction for a carb setup, please? Car is Escort, carbs are 44 IDF with the pancake and exhaust manifold is between Grp1 and original? Mild camshaft. What kind of emulsion tubes would you recommend?
We have lot of Grp1 Escorts here, but its easier to find settings for 48 overbored to 50 than 44… |

Head is Pinto 2 litre as should, not injection or 1.6 as many have here. If I tell you that to eliminate the huge flat spot we have from idle to around 5K rpm, we gonna test this set up: 145 main jets, 205 air corrector, 65 idle jets with F9 emulsion tubes. Does it make sens or just sounds far from the target? Do you modify the accelerator pump? Ignition timing is from 13° to 32° max.
Car won't cross the Channel… |

Thank you so much, Iain. Was wondering if you too use IDF's as per homologation form. We dont have many compliant cars in France, most develop more than 200 hp, an impossible figure for any appendix car. We gonna try like this and let you know if the flat spot is still there. By far we have not your experience and knowledge but I think the IDF's are the best carbs Weber made. Now we have our jets custom made because what the market suggest is sometimes pure fantasy. Thanks again!

Iain (and others of course) any recommendation for the ignition timing? Fuel is 102/FIA. We have a 2 litre Bertone Grp1 - ave power 143 hp - accepting easily 40° degrees, making the 32° of our Pinto quite conservative to say the least. I've a friend running an appendix Grp2 Mustang 289, with at least 36° fixed timing. Its seems Grp 1,5 Capris are in the region of 35/39° (not mine!) with heron design heads. None have a knock sensor…

Gerard, I wish I could offer some input into carbs and timing, having built a Gp1 RS2000! But, like Iain's, the carbs were fitted as per supplier's spec, then given to the engine builder. They set them up on the dyno, along with the ignition timing.
When I sold the car, all the set up info went with it..... |

No worry, Mike, If I recall you had your engine dynoed at Scholar (or was it Sherwood may be)?
In fact, we're looking for a basic set up in order to spare time and avoid big mistakes. Not forgetting that sometimes what works on a given engine can't be duplicated. I saw pictures from your Mk2 RS Jägermeister, appreciating the legal way you found to give negative camber to the front end! Is that one of your mechanics who collected a Magnum head, at Spa 2016? |

All RS Escorts have a small amount of negative camber on the front as standard. The Gp1 car was fitted with a World Cup crossmember, which may have slightly different pick up points for the track control arms. They were completely standard- as should be for Gp1.... “One of your mechanics”? That’s funny! To use an English expression, I am “Chief cook and bottle washer”...... Likely was Simon from Foxcraft collecting the head. |

Nice young guy, smart and polite enough to understand my pigeon English! The welding he did is still fine. May be the abuse of Dremel led Claude to check the water chambers trough the ports! WTH, because no scrutineer here is able to really check a Magnum…*Two Grp1 homologation forms are amazing, Dolly and Magnum/Firenza.

Back to square one with my new Toyota F3 engine. Only taken me 5 years on and off to build this engine. We fired her up last Friday and there was a tiny rattle from top end. Just taken the head off and the new very expensive pistons are just kissing the combustion chamber. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr/. I know what I am doing Christmas day.
