For steam enthusiasts, this was parked in a siding this morning at Norwich Thorpe. Maybe on standby, as the super new ‘bi-mode’ diesel/electric train I was due to travel home on was broke! As is required nowadays, GA had a coach waiting to take 3 passengers to Attleborough, and I only got home 10 min later. How much did that cost them! Cheaper surely to refund and make us wait an hour......

Without getting into the rights or wrongs of Boycott receiving a gong from ex PM May, his response to the awkward question posed by a journo (radio 4?) this morning was predictable and typical! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49639222 |

That particular locomotive hauled the Royal Train in the Jubilee year. Its sister loco the Princess Elizabeth was on Blackfriars Bridge during the flotilla thingy.

It so happens that a friend of mine took a trackside snap of 6233 a few months ago. Just phone snap and a small jpg file rather a nice composition. So I offered to try to make it something that would print up nicely at around A4 size - which is about the limit to which I can push the available resolution. Actually probably a bit beyond. Getting the colour right is an interesting challenge, especially from a run-of-the-mill phone based jpg, at the best of times for a number of reasons. and concurrently the printer has been playing up a lot so that having got the colour about right on the print some other stuff has left things just streaky enough to be visible at A4 size viewing distance. Anyway, the upshot is that I have a few test prints lying around and one happened to be right in front of me as I scanned the thread .... ... which is the only reason I know the name (other than checking Wiki ...) Well, that and enlarging Mike's Photos. |

Those shots of mine were taken with phone being held at arms length to miss the fence in the way!
Had to laugh, as I noticed behind the loco that the two shiny new snowploughs delivered at the start of last winter we’re still in exactly the same place, and have not moved since shunted into a corner! Wonder if they’ll move if needed this winter? |

Duchess of Sutherland was supposed to pull a train from Norwich to Chester on Saturday but suffered with a spindle bush seizing to a valve spindle, don't ask me which one though. So perhaps it's been repaired and they were testing it.
On another train note, they run a pair of high powered diesel locos pulling a couple of coaches on the Wherry lines from Norwich, total overkill. If you have fifteen minutes to spare here's a video from the son of one of my American car club mates https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7YODEuy6eQ |

Shame about the train having that problem, but these things happen. Anyway great video, really learned a bit about those trains there

Yes, Direct Rail Services always seem to run two old Class 37s with just a couple of carriages between. I’m wondering if they have a loco at each end as they can’t turn round at Gt Yarmouth or Cromer? The smoke and noise when they open the throttles to depart has to be seen to be believed..... Also when they fire them up first thing in a siding! I think Greater Anglia are introducing their new Stadler Bi-Mode thingy on that route to replace the DRS fleet. I’ve had a journey in one, and wasn’t particularly impressed. Would have been second journey today if it hadn’t expired at the station! Seats hard and very upright, hardly any space for cycles, and although you can’t hear the diesel generator unless close to that unit, the electric drive motors are just as noisy as the old diesel fleet. Different noise, though! Best thing is the low floor, which is at platform level in the middle, but the seats either end are raised to clear the bogies so there is a step up to them. So that’s the non train buffs now bored stiff..... |

If it wasn’t for you train enthusiasts, they wouldn’t run at all, let alone on time

Not quite as noisy as a VC10 taking off! Back in 1967 when BA were flying them, all their flights to Israel were "escorted" by the police whilst taxiing and taking off and landing back (as were El Al's 707s - they were the only two airlines flying there because of the 6-day war and the aftermath). This entailed at least two police motorcycles trying to keep pace with the aircraft on the outer perimeter road. But during the roll out of the VC10s, apart from the incredible noise, the ground would shake sufficiently that the outriders on the road would actually have to stop and the riders needed to put both feet on the tarmac to keep the bikes steady. The VC10 was one of the nicest aircraft that I flew on. Having always sat near the front on virtually every flight that I have ever undertaken, the noise of the 4 engines on the rear was insignificant to passengers, and just noticeable when landing and reverse thrust was engaged. Now I have probably bored the pants off of the non plane enthusiasts on here. |

Little known fact (maybe) 1 - the VC10 was the second fastest airliner ever built....after Concorde. Little known fact 2 - RAF ones had the seats facing aft. Allegedly safer in the event of a forced landing. Little known fact 3 - Vickery proposed a version for the RAFs maritime patrol role that was eventually fulfilled by the Nimrod. Little known fact 4 - Vickers proposed a double deck VC7 years before the Airbus A380 or even the Boeing 747. Pity the VC10 didn’t sell half as well as the 707. Cheer up Bob, it'll be boats next!
I think you have mentioned the Morris Minor way, way, way back. Was it a split-screen, low-light version or the later Minor 1000? Did you ever have the lavender coloured Morris Million special edition? |

Hehehe I had a Morris Marina Estate as a company car way back when, in my early twenties. The only good thing about it was it would fit my go-kart in the back with all the tools and spares.

We had a friend who had a Marina TC company car at the time of the 50mph speed limit. A garage mechanic wrote it off road-testing it after a service, so our friend was provided with a new one. Soon after the limit reverted to 70mph he was crossing the fFens one day & having completed runningéin, thought he could see what the car could do. He was soon flagged down by a plod... "Good morning sir, I take it you realise the 50 limit is no longer in force? The 70 limit is, so perhaps you could explain why we have just recorded you doing 100mph. Before our friend could you reply, he added: "Wait a minute sir, this is a Marina TC? Is it a standard one? Yes was the reply. "That's funny sir, so is our patrol car & that won't do a 100! There then followed a discussion about the merits of the Marina & he was sent on his way. Can't imagine that happening today! For any of you who travel here, the authorities say speed cameras are running again following the Gilet Jaune actions. However, according to our local paper this morning they say fixed cameras have had their day, so expect more unmarked camera cars. |

Does anyone still drive Marinas? I do like that story above, I don't know how long ago that was. Obviously the plod didn't seem to mind too much. I've heard similar stories of policeman letting people go on their way after a chat. It's great he was more fascinated by the Marina than the actual speed he was doing. However with speed cameras there is less chance of an escape, best to avoid those

The period was around 1974/5 IIRC. The same time as Ford produced the RS3100. In other words right in the middle of the oil crisis. We were all issued ration books for fuel. The Marina TC was just an MGB engined saloon car.
