I seem to remember that Jeff Uren's shop was on the Uxbridge Road in Hanwell in the 70s, where he used to carry out his Ford V6 Savage conversions into various different bodies. A friend of mine had a V6 converted Mk1 Transit with the diesel front on it and It was a hangout which inspired a few of y friends to attempt similar conversions, with various levels of success.
I remember he had a particularly nice red V6 mk2 Cortina that I lusted after |

Ford offered a 2.5 ltr V6 transit with the diesel front.
We had one with overdrive fitted and some sort of mechanical anti-lock system for the rear brakes. LWB twin rear wheels. Empty there was very little grip at the rear and the LWB made it quite controllable. Power was not massive but just about sufficient to have some fun. Especially if damp. |

In the 70s I ran a petrol station in Catford for Ultramar, nice modern self service site but plagued by 'bilkers' and the large accessory shop was always a favourite with shoplifters. I got a call from the police in the middle of the night, they'd found a queue for petrol stretching down the road at 2am - the night cashier had tried getting the previous shift's takings out of the floor safe by filling it with water so the little canisters the cash was in would float back up the tube. When this failed because the canisters had holes in he just walked out leaving the whole place open. By the time I got there the shop had pretty much been stripped, including 100 bright blue & yellow Ultramar rally jackets which became a fashion feature locally for some time after! Some of them reappeared on regular customers who came in to fill up quite unabashed |

I had a diesel Transit with the ugly front. Dreadful thing, would only start with Easy Start. It had a little hand pump inside the cab so you didn't have to get out and spray the can into the air intake.
Smelly, slow and noisy it had nothing going for it. And I loved it! "Fanny the Trannie" was a well known sight across the south as we used it for our mobile shop. Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk |

The Petrol front was the same shape but I seem to recall the the grille area was usually painted black ex factory. The diesel seemed mostly to be white.

I might be misunderstanding your statement Grant, but the Mk1 diesel front panel (and bonnet) was a completely different shape to the normal V4 petrol version. Sometimes referred to as the ‘bullnose’ front panel, it was designed to give more clearance for the radiator and i4 engine. As a result it was perfect for V6 conversions....

Bullnose could be said "nez de porc" here, same name for the Peugeot D4 van, born Chenard & Walker. Nez de cochon sounds better. Wasn't the V6 meant to be a diesel engine for the firemen dept' Transits? I dont recall the bullnose version were only diesels, long body and twin rear wheels here. And, yes, white!

The V6 petrol Mike. Should have added "V6" for full context to the reply but too late by the time I recognised my omission. |

I think it was Ford Special Vehicles Operations (SVO) who were also responsible for the special police & ambulance Transits plus possibly the earlier four wheel drive versions too. On the subject of V6 Transits. Roger & Stan Clark raced Alfa Romeo GTV saloons, Roger Clark Cars were Alfa Romeo dealers (as well as Lotus, Ford RS & eventually Porsche) at the time. They used a V6 Transit type tractor unit to tow the 2 car trailer that carried the race cars, I would imagine Roger got that direct from Ford. |

I was unsure whether it was called SVO, so thanks for clarification!
Going back to rare cars, this ((IMHO) has to be the prettiest Abarth ever.... https://www.supercars.net/blog/1951→1951-abarth-205/ |

Its 1973 L registered.
The Mk2 and 3 beam axle 4x4 Transits were conversions carried out by County Tractors for Ford I believe. Transit Rally Jacket firmly on! |

At the time that we were developing the 907 2-litre engine at Lotus, we had one fitted in a Bedford CF which was used for collections from suppliers so did a big mileage. I seem to remember blowing radiators was it's main weakness. It was quick though, enough to frighten an unsuspecting Elan Sprint-owning friend who encountered it on the A11 coming back from London one Friday evening! |

I know someone with an ex-Peugeot Sport service barge - it's the only van I've ever been in that's got a roll cage! It originally had a petrol engine, that died on route to the Tempest rally (I think "ventilated block" is the technical description....) and has been replaced by a diesel lump - it's the slowest van ever now.
