I once received an advisory on an MOT for a diesel car - emissions too clean to register!

I remember reading of a Marathon run in a German ,[ I think ], city , where they closed the whole place down to traffic .
The air pollution monitors on the streets were showing higher levels of CO2 from just the runners than when the normal levels of traffic were there .

So it is not just cows .

But of course the facts are not convenient for politicians looking for excuses to increase taxes on everybody , and motorists are the easiest target .
Errrrr - surely that proves the point of the pollution reducing measures to date? So why can't we push on further and try to do better rather than sit back and say "look how good we are"?

Just because air quality is 75% better doesn't mean it's "good" these days - it just demonstrates how even more **** it was 50 years ago.

I avoid going to big cities as much as possible, I find them unbearably cluttered, smelly and horrible. Get rid of the infernal combustion engine from cities ASAP!

Messieurs, je vous trouve en grande forme, bravissimo! Et merci pour vos sourires.

This reminds me why glycol has been banned from car coolants here. We had a lot of deaths amongst the wild cats population, because they were attracted by the leaks dipping from cooling hoses, under the cars. Seems glycol taste is like sugar. What do I know, I dont lick the leaking hoses I fix them!

This could be why, a few years ago, there was a problem with some supplies of wine - my memory suggests to me that exporters in Austria were involved - were supplemented with anti-freeze, causing untold harm to consumers.

Captain Mike can answer as to the de-icer. Also called glycol at the airports.
Bad wine in french is said "piquette" parce que ça pique comme son nom l'indique. Traces of vitriol were found in low quality wines when some were supplemented with algerian ones! Buvez moins, buvez mieux!

Years ago my late father worked in the Middle East. He brought Algerian wine back from his travels. A bottle was always the prize for the Racing **** of the Day amongst our group

Many years ago, my partner and I had friends with whom we spent quite a bit of time socialising with, and with whom we consumed copious amounts wine.

We had a competition to see who could find the cheapest bottle that was actually palatable. We won after my partner and I returned with a couple of bottles of Rioja that we purchased in a Carrefour near Marbella whilst holidaying there. It cost all of 49p a bottle, and it really was quite good, but unfortunately when we returned there a couple of years later, they no longer stocked it.

Our friends had a rather nice timeshare down in Lymington, and every week around Valentine's Day we four would go down there. We were rather embarrassed by the number of empty wine bottles we had to dispose of every day, so we would creep around the neighbouring properties placing a bottle in each of their bins. This is why I became teetotal when I realised just how much I was consuming, and I haven't regretted it, much.

We have a local Lidl in Garrucha just up the road to us in Spain that sells Conde Noble red wine that sells between 50cents and €1 per Lt ! My mate who posts on here and lives down there permanently drinks it all the time.

Still, it's a very clear means of showing how things (mostly people) can be controlled.

I honestly believe that on most occasions that they would have wished to have moved earlier, and possibly more severely.

Mike,

I'm sure the current set of "experts" would like the world locked down for a couple of years in the expectation (forlorn?) of eradication and thus the unquestionable efficacy of their reputations.

They may or may not be right in such an approach for "defeating" this virus. But even if they are it seems likely another will be along soon.

They probably are not required to have much, if any, understanding of the socio-economic results of such a policy.

Indeed the point that has continuously been made is that in the first instance the objective is to "protect the NHS".

Whether that has been achieved could be debated. Starting with a definition of "The NHS".

Whether the secondary objective - "Save lives" - has really been achieved may be open to discussion for some years to come.

Still, at least we share worldwide criticism with Sweden - along with the creation of what appears to be a successful vaccine that has also been subjected to criticism from some quarters by people who should know better than to wear their opinions as badges of fact.

Of course, for all we know, the vaccines could be placebos and the entire process just a warm up for a "new" future.

Many years ago, on holiday in Malta, we decided the local wines were OK at around 30p a bottle and the "expensive one" at about 50p was pretty good.
So we decided to bring a few bottles back in hand luggage. A heavy bag to carry for several hours but worth it for the low cost!

The cheaper bottles were OKish - just not as good in the cooler temperatures and overcast UK.

The expensive one, opened to share with some friends on a special occasion, was ..... completely undrinkable. Utterly, utterly horrible. I think I tipped it down an outside drain whilst hoping that the drain would survive the experience.

Ah yes, we've walked that road too. Bought some dreadful stuff over the years "they do such wonderful wine dahling and so cheap." As you say when you get back to the more temperate zone of the UK it shows its true use as paint stripper.

You need to go to Specsavers Grant! I wrote "20km/h speed limit reduction...", meaning 130km/h down to 110km/h, for example.
