I'm pretty sure that the thread is (and always has been) firmly tongue in cheek......

Merc really are starting to look a shadow of their former self. They should have quit while they are ahead

Clearly some have not seen the clown - Adam, did you sneak this in as a thread icon whilst nobody was looking?

With Lewis setting a new lap record, a full one second clear of the field, on a very short circuit like Monaco that really shouldn't suit their longer wheel base car and which he somehow couldn't emulate in Qualy, it feels like Merc are sandbagging and just playing games, not only with Red Bull.. but all of us.
Could he just not switch his tyres on in Qualy... or has F1 become even more of a fake reality/pantomime show? |

Yes, they are sandbagging to 7th in the most prestigious race of the year, whereas in the last six years they were happy to show their dominance and demonstrate how hyper competitive they are.
Alternatively, because he pitted again he had much better tyres when all the cars had light fuel loads toward the end of the race. It’s difficult to know really. Welcome to 10-10ths. |

The Mercedes decline continues - they now will be down to one driver in Baku as Bottas gets stuck in Finland.
Amazing how such a once great team now can't even get two drivers to an event on time. Who knows - when they unpack will they find they left a car behind too? |

With only one driver, it doesn't matter too much if they do leave a car behind, unless they were going to use it for spare parts. |

First he gets delayed in the pits, now he’s been delayed at the airport. What next?

Zero points at Baku. How the mighty have fallen.

Thought crossed my mind too.... But then he did beat Lewis today.
But then so did Mazepin! I was hoping when Russell was behind Bottas that we might get a "Valtteri, George is faster than you.... do you understand?" message, but sadly Georges car died on him. |

I would think he'll be OK for a while yet - when the decision was taken to go in very different directions on the car (in particular rear wing) for qual, one of the drivers was going to lose out and be stuck with a lousy setup for the race - that "honour" fell to Valtteri.
With that monster rear wing it also meant that he could punch a massive hole in the air to tow Lewis down the straight, which duly payed off - Valtteri took one for the team and the team know that - he won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. |

There are cracks starting to appear.
Lewis made the mistake in Imola and got the lap back thanks to the fortune of the red flag. He had no pace in Monaco and the team botched the pit stop for Bottas. Bottas was nowhere in Baku and Lewis made the big mistake and got no points. Meanwhile Max has not put a foot wrong this season. |

He sure did - and of course the race because they can't change the setup between qual and the race. Big call and a really big one to take for the team - effectively writing off any chance for the GP weekend.

I think that having been put in that position and knowing his race would be sacrificed suggests he is on borrowed time at Merc now. I can't imagine any other driver in a top team accepting a strategy that disadvantages them in favour of their teammate particularly at a track VB had usually excelled at. |
