Too young? Absolute rot!
At that age I was in my carrycot shoved behind the seats of a Frogeye Sprite, sharing the boot space with the spare wheel, taken to MG events around the south west. Didn't do me any harm. Or did it?????? "Poop, poop, fat faces." PS we're now into the third generation of MG Midget racers as Mini MM has just bought his own. Got it started last night when I got home from work, appears I haven't lost the touch. Looks like I'm being roped in as lead mechanic. Sent from my AC2003 using Tapatalk |

She openly admits that should that have been in more recent years they would both have been locked up and me taken from them, but back in the day no-one batted an eyelid. It was a case of they needed their motor racing fix and time was short as we all boarded a banana boat back to Africa a couple of weeks later. Apparently I was gurgling and giggling happily the noisier the cars got, and when it was all quiet and over apparently I burst into tears. Of course I have no memory of events that day, but Mum has always been convinced that my love of Motor Racing from a very young age was spawned from that day at Castle Combe. Happy Days The same "Didnt do me any harm, poop poop fat faces" comment applies. Last edited by E.B; 14 Jun 2021 at 06:14. |

We did a tester race after Arthur was born, WH @ Sillystone he was 7 weeks old. Slept through most of it.

I think taking one's own kids to meetings (especially back in the day) was laudable, not the least because one might as well get on with the life one was used to rather than abandoning it for a couple of decades to raise a family.
As a grandparent suspecting that there would be little likelihood of parental continuity after my valiant efforts at an introduction to the joys of motorsport and not being especially keen on trying to enjoy a day at the track as well as deal with the needs of a small child (discovering the location of any nappy changing facilities does not appeal much), I suspect the effort would be unrewarding. Plus her ability to burst eardrums with a scream might be an unfair imposition on the good people of Kirkby Mallory. (Thankfully the inclination to use that particular scream seems to have abated a great deal in the past fortnight or so. Hopefully that sort of progress will be maintained.) |

According to my mother I was two years-old when I first went to Snetterton & thereafter I went several times a year every year for more than 50 years.
In more recent times I have met others, including Mike Bell, who must have often been there at the same time but we never knew each other. Particularly uncanny is photographer Richard Styles - we must have spent our youth following each other around the Paddock as we have many near-identical photos! My initial reason for being there was that my late father was responsible for organising the St John Ambulance Brigade at the circuit from the time racing first started & he conveniently carried on right up to the time I was old enough to drive myself there. he had no real interest in the racing, so I will never know if my interest grew out of being there. |

One has to wonder what the cause of the screaming might have been. It may have been, as the Matron in charge of the maternity unit where my twins were born, told my wife and I as soon as they came into this world, this is too often just an attention seeking method that infants and youngsters develop. The way that she ran the unit was that the babies were only allowed into the mothers' ward during the daytime, and were kept in a nursery at night so that the mothers could get a good nights sleep. Babies were not fed after about 11 o'clock in the evening until about 6-7 the next morning. She found that babies soon realise that getting the miseries during the night never resulted in them being picked up and pandered over, and as a result our two never woke us up in the night. The only exception was one night when one of the boys had been unwell, and he came into our bedroom and gently woke me up apologising for the intrusion. Meanwhile, back at the hospital, if any baby was disturbing other babies, then it was taken out of the nursery and placed in another room out of earshot of mothers and other babies. And they were still not picked up. |

SO many people said to us they stopped racing when kids came along. Arthur has grown up with racing. oddly enough now he's old enough to be a proper help we've not been able to race much. Hopefully get out more next year, although he has his GCSE's . . . then he'll be old enough to drive. He has a pretty good simulator at home, his reactions are quick! watched him in a lotus 49 in the rain the other week. I was impressed.

Though I was brought up in a motorsport environment I can't claim any early motorsport attendances for myself.
However, I did the supersaloon support race at Silverstone on 19th July, 1975 when my wife was within a couple of days of her due date. We camped in a borrowed VW camper for the duration of the meeting. My daughter was duly born on the 28th July. My brother was also there and his wife had produced his daughter on the 14th July. I look back and feel a little selfish for the vast amount of time competing dominated all other aspects of my life! Somewhere in TenTenths (probably the Geoff Wood Escort thread in M/S History) there is a picture of my car and said VW camper. |

I was working at Castle Combe when MiniMM was born, and we were short of money as all new parents are. His first family visit out was to the race track because of course I had free tickets. I was lucky to have access to some of the unused buildings for child care duties which helped.
I think it was the F3/British GT meeting. He's always loved GT racing ever since...... Sent from my AC2003 using Tapatalk |

My family had no association with any form of motor sport, and my passion was influenced by friends that I made after I left school. I have passed on my passion to my two boys, but the grandchildren aren't really interested.
But it is a small world, though. It turned out that the father in law of one of my sons was a co-driver for a number of years for the McRae family, and he only gave up a few years ago with other drivers. None of his children have any interest whatsoever. |

The ICS association started in 1992 and had big grids of historic racing saloons. The series lasted about 5 years and numbers tailed off in the last couple of years when it became part of the BTCC package and entry fees had to be paid up front for the season and race cars had to arrive at the circuits between certain times on the Friday evenings and couldn't be removed from the circuit before racing finished. It was all too much for most of us who had to work for a living and couldn't afford the time and expense to become 'semi-pros'. Good though in the early years with Gordon, Ronnie Fielding, Nick Stagg and Pete Landers mixing it with the Mustangs of Pete Hall and the Torregianis. |

My Dad as I have said before worked for JW Automotive. For some reason Mum and Dad did not want me to race.I had an older brother who had no interest in racing but he came along in the early days and would report back to my parents as to what was going on.
They never came racing and never spoke about it. One day I went round to see them and there was a picture of me at Brands Hatch on the wall. I would of loved Dad to of come along but it never happened. On the other hand my poor children were dragged alone at a very early age.We loved camping it was great fun in those days There was never a shortage of friends who would look after them for me. My daughter was very cute and with long blond hair all the grannies loved her. One lasting memory was winning a race at Snetterton and Malc the pit lane marshal held her up in his arms right by the chequred flag man so she could wave at me. Happy days. BTW Stewart now 30 finally had a go in a FF2000 at Mallory a few weeks back. We got his licence when he was 17 but he has never shown an interest to race. He will stand in the pooring rain at Spa for 6 hours and run the pit board but never wants to drive. |

I even had all my race entries paid for by Larkins Brewery as well as supplying a barrel of ale for our team and friends at the meetings They were great times and I don't regret any of it |

I was always interested in motor racing on 2 and 4 wheels and got a job as an apprentice motor mechanic with Mountains Garage. I used to push bike to Brands and C/Palace to watch until I got a licence to ride a motorbike. This is the way I remember things were when I first started before the Imps arrived on the scene in the picture.

That Transporter set up is fantastic. Just about the only car left on my wish list, realistically, is a fin tailed Harrington Alpine. Quite fancy one as a road car.

The Harrington's were a pretty car in their day and still are, I remember one of the first V8 engined Alpine's before it was called the Tiger in the race section as well. One of the worse jobs was decoking the TS3 engines cylinder barrels as was fitted in the transporter

I remember as a lad a mate's elder brother showing me a sketch he'd done of a coupe version of an Alpine, which he reckoned would be a good seller - about two weeks later I saw the first photo I'd seen of a Harrington and was really impressed about how quickly he'd got his design accepted........
I think he was gutted, really, that someone had beaten him to it but to we young lads he took the credit |

Hehe. Might be possible these days. 3D printing and stuff .... I can remember thinking that full rear screen and boot might make a Mk4 Zephyr/Zodiac look quite like a poor man's Jensen Interceptor. Drew a sketch on a sales brochure as I recall. That may have pre-dated the public release of the Interceptor. I guess the much later Saab 9000/Renault 25/Lancia Thema concepts were similar. I vaguely remember thinking that a similar thing on a Lotus Cortina could be made to work as well. Probably very wrong on that one. |

When I was at college as an apprentice I drew pictures of an engine that I wanted to make with solenoid operated valves that were timed with another table of points in the distributor, I don't know if anyone ever made one ?

I dunno if it was used but it seems the patent name is camless.

Your idea Gordon, as a retrofit, you can even have blind block suppressing the head gasket: https://www.enginetechnologyinternat...lidevalve.html

I drew up my idea in 1962 but obviously couldn't make it, perhaps I should have put a patent on it ?

May be you should have put a patent but because the use of such things is close to none, you would have been famous -may be- but not rich because of the Gordon'sEngine. No regret IMO.
