Yes, a whole lot said with no denial, in fact just the opposite. Others, some well connected in Germany are reporting that BMW and Audi are both in the market to buy the McLaren Group in its entirety.

Just how does all this play out?
If Audi takes McLaren racing or has a tie up does Porsche tie in with RBR when the new engine rules come in?
Personally I don't want McLaren to be bought up by VW-Audi-Porsche-SEAT-Lamborghini.
But well see what transpires here.

McLaren Racing is one of three subsidiaries of the McLaren Group. Audi would have needed to have complete ownership of the McLaren Group, in order to give Audi full control over McLaren Racing and the F1 team.

If it is structured as you say (and I don't know how McLaren is structured). That is not true. If McLaren Racing is part of McLaren Group. And the Racing part would be the target. They would only need to acquire the racing part. Now, that would have to be in coordination with McLaren Group. But the point is they don't have to buy ALL (or controlling interest) of McLaren Group to get the F1 side.

I have no opinion one way or another regarding the rumor. I tend to think McLaren would not be looking to totally sell the team. Now something similar to what Mercedes has done, maybe. Note that Mercedes F1 is owned 1/3 Toto, 1/3 Mercedes and 1/3 Ineos.

Imagine a McLaren-Porsche or McLaren-Audi that is still run by existing McLaren organization, but with VAG cash infusion including full manufacture support on the power unit side.

It is currently reported that the McLaren Group Ownership is:
Mumtalakat Holding Company 56.4%, TAG Group Limited 14.32%, Nidala (BVI) Limited (Michael Latifi) 9.84%, Favorita Limited 5.78%, Perlman Investments Limited 5.77%, McKal Holdings Ltd 5.24%, Acanitt Limited 2.65%.

As you say, to secure an F1 entry, there only needs to be a controlling influence (not necessarily majority ownership) of McLaren Racing.

I think the main factor at play here would be willingness of Qatar Investment Authority to enter into a partnership or deal with Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company.
