Exerpts from AutoSport...
Cheever claims that Scheckter signed a five-year contract with TWR in 2002, and that through Cheever's partnership with TWR via its Infiniti engines, Red Bull Team Cheever had an option on the South African's services in 2003. "He has made the insinuation that our cars were unsafe; that's how he's trying to free himself from the contract," Cheever said. "We have very valid reasons to claim slander and a bunch of other things, which we will pursue aggressively once the first step is successful." TWR is currently seeking a court date in London for its case against Scheckter. If this is successful Cheever says that he'll consider pursuing the matter against Ganassi and engine supplier Toyota. The version I've heard is that Dixion will be driving for Ganassi in CART in 03.

As far as I've heard, Ganassi will have 2 cars (Dixon & Scheckter) in the IRL and 1 car in CART for 2003.

David Phillips' Sunday notebook column on Speed TV says that Forsythe has bought all of Ganassi's Lola equipment. If true, that would indicate that Ganassi is not running CART in '03.

The latest thing is that Toyota are trying to bribe Chip into not running in CART 'with someone else's engine' doesn't surprise me, and should scotch any theory that the IRL influx is being madfe for pure racing decisions. My hope is for 2 IRL cars for Scheckter and Ward, and one in CART for Dixon, but we'll see.

Hasn't Chip been quoted on many occasions as saying it is IRL only in 2003?

Chip sold his Lolas and ordered chassis for a two car IRL team. He is working on a third team still. It would be in the IRL also though from what I understand. Dixon and Scheckter, legal situation pending of course, are signed for the IRL program.
If Chris Pook needs to buy teams there are ones that come a lot cheaper than Ganassi. Lots of small teams and teams that don't even exist are more than willing to work within the system that they are trying to lay out. Any of these teams would be thrilled to run in what will be kind of a stripped down CART compared to the one that Chip is leaving. Better to have happy campers singing the party line than have someone dipping in both series and possibly fueling the fires of discontent. Dan Last edited by gofastturnleft; 21 Nov 2002 at 02:18. |
