Sid Miller's Organs

At a meeting last night, the above chap came up in conversation. He was pretty well known in the 70s for sponsoring many British drivers and series from about 1974-76. At one point it appeared he was throwing money at everything in sight.

It was all a scam of course, but does anyone know how it happened. I recall a TV documentary about him, involving him duping Vicars out of cash via some Church Organ thing.
Without wishing to go into any dodgy legal areas, anyone know what went on, and did any of our competitor members get involed at all ?

A certain gentleman with whom you were drinking last night posted this link on another forum.

http://www.vigil-productions.com/organs.htm

A very bizarre tale indeed.

Blimey, I remember this all too well. Looking back, it seemed strange that no-one thought to ask where all the dosh came from (Miller and his cohorts arrived suddenly from nowhere)and that no-one had any doubts about it all. Or perhaps they did - after all, no impoverished racing driver is going to turn down free money, is he? Trouble is, he left several poor sods high and dry after his disappearing act.

You will be happy (sic) to know that similar types of people are still alive and well down under Team sponsors promising all sorts of dollars, and delivering virtually nothing, while also having nothing in collateral in the corporate entity to go chasing.

Poor form all round I think.

Bad part is, the same operation did it to 2 separate V8 Supercar teams here, one in 2001, another this year, for a couple of million dollars a pop

from memory ...... churches are not allowed to buy on hire purchase so Mr Miller and Co got the the drivers/teams to sign the HP agreements on behalf of the churches so that the churches got a new organ and the drivers got something of a budget ..... all went wrong when someone caught on and a bunch of drivers bought organs !

As your local vicar !
