All these Escorts that keep crawling out of the woodwork, soon there will be more than were made in the first place.
Like Lotus Cortinas ! |

Nice looking car Henrik, sure Jacob will enjoy it when finished! Presume you are thinking of using 4 speed gearbox. Obviously Quaife and TranX are main suppliers of strengthened s/c close ratio internals, but it is also now possible to get helical c/r sets from another source. I will remember who shortly and post their name! Tell us more about your suspension and axle set up- how is front location done, ARB or link, and is rear axle on trailing arms and watts linkage, leaf springs or coils? |

Of course your post carries greater importance than would mine. I'm sure there are more Escorts rallying now then there ever were 'in period'. Seems to be heading the same way on the track except for the Ford Escort Mexico Challenge (or whatever it was called.) What happened to the remains of all of those? |

The 'Shellsport Mexicos'? There are one or two still about in the AVO club, and much discussion about a restored car supposedly driven by Jack Brabham in period which was going round the auction circuit a year or so back.

'Tea' was a beef casserole (with peppers and stuff) accompanied by boiled new potatoes and creamed cabbage with sherry. Trés gay! With luck there is enough left over to feed us until the New Year ... |

The 'guest' cars were driven by all sorts of people of course. Francois Cevert did the Mallory August Bank Holiday event in '73 a few weeks before he died at Watkins Glen. If any of the original guest cars still exist (perhaps they do) the register of names that would have opened and closed their doors would read like a who's who of late 60s early 70s racing. |

My mate George Polley was involved in the Mexico Challenge all those years back and built a car to the absolute specifications .
He was made to look a real wally in his first two races until he found out what the so called "specs" were that the front runners were using. After doing all the usual tweaks like leaving 3 tons of weight in the car all week plus fitting starter bendix springs "inside" the std front struts and all the usual "hidden engine mods" he found how to get on the front of the grid |

The Mexico Challenge was the serious race series so not surprised! Tell us more- may be of use to one or two on here
The celebrity race cars were to my understanding very much off the production line. Spent a lot of time in bodyshops after that...... |

how many million Escort RS/Mexicos did they make, compared to the 37off 1100 delux they made?
THe Cortina club register has 25 pre aerflow GT's, 180 earflow GT's and over 400 ex Jim Clark cars, as Peter says, go figure! |

Zef: I knew it. A early GT is a rarer bird than a Lotus-Cortina, and a Ford GT 40 !!

ha ha brings us back to my comments on originality and scrutineering/cheating on the New Championship/series thread, what a load of old ****locks. Ian come out with us in the Escort at least you can do sensible things to upgrade it without cheating and thats what I like, not too far like Heritage but further than HSCC and a nice compromise, I am greatly looking forward to racing with you.

Joe- 883 TwinCams, 1137 RS1600s and 3500 RS2000s. Can't remember how many Mexicos but not as many as RS2000. Last time I asked there were less than 100 RS1600 on club register, but of course not all surviving cars are with members.

I see no reason why not- seen them on all sorts of cars. Want one for Gilbern but would have to order 20 before they would make them

I would be very carefull Nick,I think you'll find them to be in one of the many 'grey area's'.They certainly never used to be allowed,[although we did get some made for TR4s several years ago] somehow we never got pulled for it.

Good news from Rita Wilcox yesterday- no damage to Escort engine from head gasket failure. They have faced the head and block, so with routine top and tail will be back to full health next season! Will be dyno'd in Jan after John & Rita back from sunny Spain. Have already gone through rest of car- hubs & brakes stripped and rebuilt as necessary, diff and cwp visually checked, gearbox opened up by it's builder (and promptly closed again as looked like new inside!) plus have had all the manifold bits coated by Zircotec. Also spent 2 days under car cleaning all the grime off...... Engine going back into 924 this morning then can finish wiring off. |
